Paul "P-Rod" Rodriguez talks X Games Ventura

This week Sublime founding member Eric Wilson and the band’s new frontman Jacob Nowell -- son of the late Bradley Nowell -- dropped by the Klein.Ally.Show at the KROQ studios in Los Angeles, bearing gifts including an exclusive spin of their new song, “Feel Like That,” featuring both Bradley and Jakob's vocals.

Now a full member of Sublime, Jakob remembers, “I was definitely a very small child when he passed away but you know, growing up with so much of the interesting culture that Sublime created, it was sort of always there in the background of my life.”

“Having been in and out of bands the last 10 years just trying to toil in obscurity,” he says, “It's so crazy,” getting to work so closely with his uncles, and especially now hearing his and his late father’s voices side by side. “It's totally eerie,” he admits, “but it all came together in such an organic way of us just jamming with people that we like that it feels really natural.”

“I think the universe put it together for us pretty much,” Eric adds.

“It's only gonna keep getting better,” Jakob says of his involvement with the band. “I try to take the gig super seriously and just learn it as best to my abilities, and also try to portray the music faithfully and have fun doing it. That's the main thing when I'm up there with these guys. We’re just having a blast.”

“To be back with my brother Bud [Gaugh] is fantastic,” Eric says of the reunion. “You know, I miss him to death and we weren’t getting along for a long time, but now I'm just so thankful.”

Jakob’s contribution, he says, “Added to his dad's vocals because he's been doing this stuff… building his band… and then so he came out with us. He's put his time in.” Turning to Jakob, Eric asks, “How long have you been listening to Sublime now?”

“I mean, it's always been there when I was a little kid, but actually listening, man, just since we started jamming again. Before the [benefit for Bad Brains frontman HR], I went and actually listened to all the records all the way through because it's like, it was hard for me. I never sought it out because it's kind of emotional hearing a passed family member's voice. It kind of tugs at you, but for this right reason, it just felt totally right.”

“I never thought I'd do something like this track and I think it's the lyrical content, the sound of it -- It's kind of perfect for the era we're in,” Jakob says of their 2024 track “Feel Like That.”

“All the music means so much to me,” he says. “It's been so many years this music has meant so much to so many people, it's so cool to kind of usher in a new era here.”

It’s worth mentioning that Bradley Nowell’s vocals featured in the song are his actual vocals, not AI-generated, a concept the guys are both absolutely opposed to. “It kind of cuts out our job, doesn't it?” Jakob asks. Although he does admit that since the day he started singing he sounded similar to his father. “There's certain things,” he says, “it'll come out almost when I don't even think about it, when I don't try to.”

“It's almost like the less I try to, the better,” he explains. “You know, I could do it one-for-one and try to sound exactly like him, and there'd still be people who would be like, ‘Well, now he doesn't have enough…’ You're never gonna please everybody by doing things one-to-one, so I try to hit things in a genuine way. I think that a lot of times what made my dad's talent so cool is it appeared so effortless, and it appeared so fun and just in the moment, and improvisational. I try to keep that in mind in the spirit of everything we do.”

Jakob Nowell and Eric Wilson on the future of Sublime

Kings Of Leon took some time to catch up with KROQ's Nicole Alvarez, discussing their tumultuous past interview, as well as the band's brand new album, Can We Please Have Fun, upcoming tour dates, and much more.

After first touching on Kings Of Leon's first KROQ interview together (which may have been one of Nicole's most embarrassing life moments that she now holds near and dear to her heart), Caleb was gracious enough to admit "That was kind of part of the thing in the beginning, right? You kind of had to tick all the boxes, I guess. But also, I feel like that time back then it was a lot crazier. Not just who all of us were collectively, but I feel like there was a -- I don't know -- I feel like people just take care of themselves a little better these days, but it was fun while it lasted.”

Now with their latest album on shelves, Kings Of Leon’s music, Caleb believes, is “always an evolution, so you're always gonna kind of maybe try to say something that you feel like you either tried to say before, but it came out the wrong way -- or just adding to that story. Musically, you're always developing your craft and getting better at it. Sometimes that can be a good thing, sometimes that can be a bad thing because sometimes the music can become more of a thing and then the song kind of gets lost.” He adds, “I feel like for this album, I did want to kind of go back to the old days where the story of the song meant so much to me.”

The album’s title, Caleb explains, came from “a little book of ideas… and that was one that I had in there amongst a bunch of other things. I read a bunch of what I thought were potential album titles, and when I said, ‘Can We Please Have Fun,’ Jared was like, ‘Yeah, I like that one.’ We went along and I didn't really think that was gonna end up being the title, but I felt like the more the album came together, it felt like it was a bigger statement than just us wanting to enjoy ourselves in the process of making an album, it seemed like the whole world has kind of been feeling that way.”

“Oddly enough,” he continues, “even having a title like that, that made us feel like, ‘is that too risky to ask for fun?’ Even that felt like, ‘Oh, I don't know… are people gonna get mad?’ You know? That's the case in the world these days. So, I think that's why it's important to ask that question.”

As family members and band members, “I think that we made a point of it to stay on the same page, this [album],” says Jared. “Caleb got us this book, so we were reading the same thing. We were passing around playlists listening to the same music trying to all get locked in and it happened. It was weird, tons of synchronicity and just that we're all on the same vibration.”

“Last night we played a concert… it was in a barn. It was really cool, but it was only like a few hundred people, kind of an intimate affair. I mean, people could see it on TV, but it was intimate to us,” says Caleb.

“While we're performing, I was looking around the room and [saw] so many familiar faces from throughout our career, there were people that [were] there from the very beginning, and then there were our children up there singing the songs," he recalls. "It was like this whole full-circle thing that was just pretty special. To me, at times, it feels like we just started. But then times like that you go, ‘Oh yeah, we've been doing this for a little while,’ and people were singing songs from the new record like they had been out for 20 years. I mean, screaming the words back to us. I was like, ‘Man, that's something that if you're lucky, you get to feel that as a young band, you know? To have people interested in your music and passionate about it and they'll scream it... it does make me feel like we have a chance to be around for a long time if we want to.”

Kings of Leon break down new album 'Can We Please Have Fun'

Bud Gough, Eric Wilson, and Jakob Nowell of Sublime joined host Kevan Kenney before their Coachella weekend 2 set, and looking back on the emotional reunion performance, Kevan tells them he heard “tears were shed” in the crowd. Although Jakob admits, “I don't think it was that bad.”

“It was more of a sound check really though because we didn't have a sound check,” Eric says of the first weekend’s set. “But as far as the crowd, [it] was insane.” For his part, leading up to the double weekend performances, Jakob had been hinting to fans that the band had been putting in a lot of time practicing to make it all just right. “Everybody wishes it could be a little bit tighter,” he explains, “but I was so happy just having fun playing with everybody up there. It was a good time.”

“This week's gonna be even better, I think because now, like me personally, I kind of got my jitters out a little bit and now I'm just excited to go up there and just enjoy the experience for what it is and got a bunch of good feedback from everybody,” Jakob says. “I'm just so overwhelmed by the huge support,” he adds. “Everybody seemed to really love it and [it] makes me happy.”

Known to incorporate nostalgic sounds and ideas in his own band, Jakobs Castle making the transition to front Sublime came easily he explains. “I just try to learn the material faithfully, still put my little twist on it, but I try to do the best I can with singing, make sure I'm in key and everything like that. But I think it's just so amazing how many different, cool musicians that Sublime is influenced [by] and that whole era of music in general. I mean, so many people out here at this festival, both young and old, and using different elements from that era -- that's what really blows my mind.”

“With my work in Jakobs Castle, it's like kind of going back and cherry-picking all the cool stuff that I see and trying to re-blend it all together. When I left my old band Law, I went on this huge mission to try to just increase my ability with singing and writing and that sort of thing, and I think that totally translates to the stage. I treat it like a gig and being like, ‘OK, I'm gonna take this seriously, rehearse every night, and try to do the best possible job I can do.’”
