Wednesday marks one year since the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Police there say an 18 year old gunman killed 19 students and two teachers before he was shot and killed by authorities.

Lawmakers are making a final push for their bills at the state Capitol as the 88th Texas legislative session enters its final weeks. And as the anniversary of the Uvalde mass shooting nears, the spotlight will shine on bills that would address school safety. To learn what lawmakers are doing to improve school safety, Baylee Friday is joined by state Sen. Roland Gutierrez (D-San Antonio), who represents Uvalde, Derek Cohen, the vice president of policy at the conservative think tank Texas Public Policy Foundation, and Rena Honea, president of Alliance AFT.

Elementary school students in Uvalde were two days away from the end of the school year, instead, they were killed in the worst school shooting in Texas history. 

Parents of Uvalde CISD students want the district to suspend its entire police department. They have been holding vigils and camping outside district headquarters. One of the officers hired by Uvalde CISD was a Department of Public Safety trooper and responded the day of the shooting. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were positioned outside Uvalde Consolidated ISD on Wednesday -- the second day of school for students. School started after Labor Day this year in the wake of the deadly mass shooting in May.

Students in the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District returned to class Tuesday for the first time since the mass shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers in May. Chris Fox reports that while some security measures have been added, not every recommendation has been implemented.

Schools in Texas will begin having their security systems audited in September as part of a directive ordered by Governor Greg Abbott after the Uvalde shooting. The Texas School Safety Center says all school districts and 75% of individual campuses will be inspected by the end of this school year.

Raw emotions and again disappointment from families of victims in Uvalde after parents were turned away from a meeting last night. That meeting, held by the Uvalde Mayor, brought Texas House of Representatives to release their report on what its special committee says happened at Robb Elementary School two months ago. Anayeli Ruiz, is a KHOU Reporter that was there. She has been reporting on the scene and reporting on mass shooting since day one. After a Texas House report on the Uvalde mass shooting released Sunday revealed a lack of communication inside the school and that law enforcement did not act quickly enough to confront the gunman, associate dean at the school of criminology at Tarleton State University, Alex Del Carmen, says it was a "failure at all levels."

The federal government has approved $5 million in funding from its "Victims of Crimes Act" to help children and families affected by the shooting this spring in Uvalde, and the state is now looking at how to use the money. Doctors and medical professionals testified before the Texas House Appropriations Committee Tuesday.

People in Uvalde attended a meeting of the town's City Council on Thursday to vent their frustration over the lack of new information on the school shooting that killed 21 people at Robb Elementary. Some residents pushed for the release of police body-camera footage, while others called for the city to take action against Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo. His response to the shooting has been criticized by the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

On Thursday, House committees will hear testimony about the mass shooting in Uvalde, one day after the Senate wrapped up its own hearing.

McDonald's is stepping up in a big way to help victims of the Uvalde school massacre.

The Texas Senate committee investigating the response to Uvalde is hearing a second day of testimony Wednesday. Tuesday, the Special Committee to Protect All Texans heard from law enforcement about the response, police training, and social media. Wednesday's hearing included a discussion about mental health and gun safety.

A teacher at Robb Elementary in Uvalde has started an Amazon wish list to replace items teachers left behind after the shooting last month. On June 1, Superintendent Hal Harrell announced students and teachers would not return.

The police response to the mass shooting last month at a Uvalde elementary school was an "abject failure," the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety told a Texas Senate committee on Tuesday.

A music hall in Downtown Arlington will host a concert on Thursday night featuring a dozen Texas artists raising money for the families of Uvalde victims. "United for Uvalde" will take place at Arlington Music Hall.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) says hopes the bipartisan group of lawmakers that has been meeting on gun legislation in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting could have a proposed bill on paper for other lawmakers to review in the next few days.

In the wake of Uvalde and so many other shootings that came before it, educators are emploring lawmakers to make change. The "Protecting Our Kids Act" was passed by the House late on Wednesday, but is not expected to pass the Senate. Following her testimony before Congress on Gun Violence, Becky Pringle, who leads the National Education Association, the nation’s largest teacher’s union representing more than 3 million educators, talked with KRLD's John Liddle.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform held a hearing Wednesday on potential gun legislation. Testimony included four people from Texas who were in Uvalde on the day of the shooting at Robb Elementary School on May 24th.

Survivors of gun violence, including a fourth-grader from Uvalde, will testify Wednesday before a Congressional committee debating gun reform. CBS News' Congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane joined the KRLD Morning News to preview the testimony.

Uvalde native Matthew McConaughey visited the White House for a meeting with President Biden to discuss some of the gun control measures currently being considered in Washington after the mass shooting in his hometown. Following the meeting, McConaughey made a speech to reporters in the White House Briefing Room.

The group, March for Our Lives, is planning marches across Texas later this month in response to the shooting in Uvalde. The group was started by students after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018.

An attorney who has represented victims of mass shootings says suing over the Robb Elementary school shooting could be an uphill climb.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee will begin hearings Thursday on a gun control measure. The "Protecting Our Kids Act" follows work by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in a meeting with other senators Tuesday. Cornyn met with Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ).

One thing you can do to show your support for Uvalde is to sign a poster for that community. Until the end of the week, you can stop by DFW National Funeral Home, 6428 Brentwood Stair Rd., Fort Worth, to sign one of the posters that will be delivered to one of the funeral homes in Uvalde.

Law enforcement officials are trying to defend themselves from criticism that they didn't act soon enough to stop the Uvalde massacre. Officials said Thursday the 18-year-old gunman who slaughtered 21 people at an elementary school entered the building "unobstructed'' through a door that was apparently unlocked. Victor Escalon, a regional director at the Texas Department of Public Safety, delivered an update at press conference Thursday.
