The Central Sierra saw an astounding 17+ feet of snowfall in December 2021, breaking a record last set in 1970. The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab has been tracking snowfall in Donner Pass near Truckee, California for more than five decades. What would all those data points sound like if you turned them into music? We turned 51 years of December snowfall in Donner Pass into this sonification.

Last month, the Sierra was blanketed in more than 17 ft of snow, breaking the record for December snowfall last set in 1970.
That is what it sounds like when you turn december 2021 snow data into musical notes. The Central Sierra Snow lab has been keeping track of snowfall in Donner Pass for over 50 years, hears the sound of 2017 when the skies over Donner Pass dropped a mere six inches in the month of december.
Let's compare that to a more average December 2007 when the area got a little over six ft of powder.
