View descriptionShare

Plans are underway to revitalize East Oakland.  Rise East is a collective of nonprofits and it’s seeking to invest 100 million dollars back into the neighborhood. The goal is to bring about long-term systemic change, from education to public safety to housing. One of the nonprofits involved is the Black Cultural Zone. Its CEO is Carolyn Johnson and she joins us. Rise East could transform East Oakland for residents and business owners. KQED’s Maria Fernanda Bernal spoke with the owner of the oldest Black-owned business on International Boulevard, who shared his memories of the neighborhood and his hopes for its future.
