By the 1950's, Elena Zelayeta was considered the foremost authority on Mexican cooking in America. She was the first Latina with a televised cooking show in the U.S, wrote four cookbooks, and a memoir. Though she died in 1974, Elena Zelayeta's influence still looms large over Mexican food in the Bay Area.
