A plan to build the state’s first carbon storage facility has taken a big step forward. The Kern County Planning Commission approved a proposal from the state’s largest oil company to store some 50 million tons of carbon dioxide underground, where it can’t warm the planet. KVPR’s Joshua Yeager reports from Bakersfield on the controversial project called Carbon Terravault.

In November, California voters will decide whether to grant cities more power to regulate rents. 

This comes as rent control is gaining momentum nationally — President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have embraced the cause. Here in the Bay Area, residents of Berkeley, Larkspur, San Anselmo and Fairfax will vote on rent control in November, and San Francisco city leaders are considering a plan to expand protections. 

I spoke with KQED housing affordability reporter Vanessa Rancaño, who has been covering this. She started by telling me exactly how Proposition 33... if it PASSES... would change rent control in California.
