After 57 years in Oakland, Major League Baseball's Athletics franchise relocated at the end of the 2024 season - opting to play at least three years in a minor league ballpark in West Sacramento rather than stay in the East Bay. Ownership’s ultimate goal is to build a stadium in Las Vegas, although they have not yet broken ground on it. The owners’ decision to move has angered, frustrated, and saddened die-hard fans of the team. KQED has extensively covered the A’s search for a new home since 2011. This entry includes stories from April 5, 2024 – the day after the decision to leave for Sacramento was announced – an interview segment from September 25, and just some of the coverage from the day of the final home game, September 26. In addition to a preproduced feature that aired in the morning, KQED anchor Brian Watt hosted five hourly newscasts from the press box at the Oakland Coliseum during the game. This entry concludes with a feature that aired the morning after the last game on September 27, 2024.
The coverage was coordinated by editors Alexander Gonzalez and Ted Goldberg and producer Nina Thorsen; news anchors Ariana Proehl and Ted Goldberg are heard in addition to Brian Watt, KQED reporters Azul Dahlstrom-Eckman, Dan Brekke, and Joseph Geha, writers Dan Moore of The Ringer and Melissa Lockard of The Athletic, and many Oakland fans.
