Listening to Fireballs: the Explosively Brilliant Meteors Translated into Music

View descriptionShare

This month, from April 16 to April 25, the Lyrids meteor shower will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere. And while it's considered to be a medium strength shower, Lyrids can sometimes produce fireballs–especially bright explosions that can leave visible smoke trails. NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) keeps data on fireballs that are detected by global weather satellites. In this data sonification, learn more about fireballs and hear these explosions turned into music.
