How Sandy Stone Became the Trans Trailblazer of Her Generation

View descriptionShare

Transgender advocates in California and around the country are mobilizing in response to federal policies and legal actions targeting their community. In the face of political headwinds brought on by the Trump administration, trans folks are highlighting their long history of resistance - and using that to build their resilience today. One of the people who’s helped document this history is Sandy Stone. She’s 88, and has made history herself multiple times over. Her life's work includes academics in transgender studies and in music as an audio engineer, working alongside artists like Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead. Last year, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. KQED’s Nastia Voynovskaya brings us this profile.
