Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee says she intends to run for re-election in November … just as she marks one year in office this week. Voters elected her last year … following the recall of the city’s former mayor Sheng Thao, who was later indicted on bribery charges. As Lee was being sworn in as mayor, she promised to bring an era of stability to Oakland. Lee is the first Black woman to serve as Oakland’s mayor … and she brings to the job decades of experience as an East Bay representative in Congress. This desire for stability faced a test this week given a major shake-up in Oakland’s government. Mayor Lee talked with me about that as she reflected on her first year in office - and the role that voters will play at the ballot box to help chart the city’s future.
