One year since the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan as a nation is crumbling--and the sting of America's chaotic, deadly withdrawal is very fresh

View descriptionShare

One year ago today, the Taliban shocked the world as their forced rolled into Kabul with little resistance.  In the days that would follow, the Taliban would cement their grip on Afghanistan and the U.S. military would rush a bungled withdrawal that left over a dozen servicemembers dead and plenty of people left behind.

In the year that's followed, any progress made in Afghanistan during the 20 year American war there was reversed, as women's rights evaporated overnight.  Millions of Afghans have been dealing with food insecurity, and much of the government has ceased to exist.

Meanwhile there are still a lot of bitter feelings about the chaotic and deadly withdrawal of U.S. forces.

Douglas Ollivant is a senior fellow at the New America Foundation; he's a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel who spent a year in Afghanistan as a counterinsurgency advisor to the U.S. military commander.
