Tesla's plan to lay off 14,000 workers is sounding alarms.

KNX News asked Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, if low interest from car buyers for EV's is signaling big trouble ahead.

Fisher tells us one of the biggest challenges is the fact that EV's are all VERY expensive right now ... he says it didn't used to be that way.

But when drivers do finally experience what it's like drive an EV ... few go back to gas-powered cars.

Tesla's announcement today of 14,000 layoffs is casting a spotlight on the health of the electric vehicle market.

While EV sales have grown almost every year ... the demand is still quite low.  Fast charging EV's is perhaps the biggest obstacle to wider adoption of electric cars.

KNX News talked with Matt Petersen, CEO of the LA Cleantech Incubator Lab ... he says that public chargers are often unreliable and broken ... but they're trying to get better at fixing them.

Then there's the dilemma of getting charging stations into apartment buildings.

Even with the challenges, Petersen has ambitious goals for building out chargers ... and expanding EV's ... for SoCal.

Tesla announced today it will begin laying off about 14-thousand workers. That's about 10-percent of its workforce.  We wanted to know whether this was a Tesla problem ... or a problem with the E-V market in general.

KNX News spoke with Stephanie Brinley, automotive analyst at Standard & Poor's ... She says the E-V market is in the middle of a really messy period of transition.

Brinley says outside of California, the rest of the country is proving to be reluctant about E-V's.

But is that switch away from gas-powered vehicles to electric ones ... inevitable?
