46 days to go until election day.  On today's Countdown 2024--the youth vote. Many young people will be casting ballots for the first time. We talk to one young Democrat and one young Republican who are both excited to vote in a presidential election for the first time. We'll ask them though if others their age feel the same way. 

Martin Bertao is a UC Berkeley student and chairman of California College Republicans. Also with us is Aiden Ledbetter, a UC Davis student and president of California College Democrats. Both will be voting in their first presidential election.

47 days to go until election day .   On today's Countdown 2024 we're turning to local politics:  one week ago, we talked with embattled LA City Councilman Kevin de Leon.  Today, we're talking with the woman looking to unseat him ... Ysabel Jurado.

But first----a quick spin around the political world:

We may be on the verge of a shakeup in the race for governor of North Carolina.  Republican candidate Mark Robinson is facing pressure from fellow Republicans and the Trump campaign to leave the race in the key swing-state. This because of a damning scandal involving several inflammatory comments ... of a sexual nature ... that Robinson allegedly made on a pornographic website's message board as being reported by CNN. Robinson has said he's staying in the race and has denied making the comments, calling the story "tabloid trash".

The  so-called Uncommitted Movement ... which sprang from  organizing efforts to get people to vote "uncommitted” in Democratic primaries to  protest  the Biden administration's handling of the Israel-Gaza war ... says it will NOT be endorsing Kamala Harris for president ... even though the group opposes Donald Trump.

This could have major reverberations in a swing state like Michigan. Thousands of Arab American voters there remain disenchanted over Kamala Harris's refusal to support an arms embargo against Israel.

Division within the powerful Teamsters Union. Yesterday, the union said it will not be endorsing either Trump or Harris. But several local Teamster councils went ahead and endorsed Harris on their own. That includes the West Coast Teamsters with some 300 thousand members right here in California.

Ysabel Jurado is a relative political unknown ... going up against one of the most experienced and established politicians in Southern California.  But that didn't stop Jurado from upsetting the scandal-plagued Kevin de Leon in the primary.

Jurado describes herself as a "tenants rights attorney, affordable housing activist, single mom, daughter of undocumented Filipino immigrants, and a lifelong Angeleno" ... and she joins us today on Countdown 2024.

On today's Countdown 2024 we're dissecting the economic plans of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris ... and getting the latest polling snapshot from a couple of key swing states.

But first, a quick lap around the political world:

The Federal Reserve lowered the benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point, the first rate cut since 2020 .That will eventually make borrowing money a lot cheaper.  Good news for the Harris campaign. Not so good for Trump. He claims a rate reduction now is election interference. 

More on this later on Countdown 2024 . We also  have new polling out from Quinnipiac , focusing on the crucial swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.  Kamala Harris has slim leads in all three states. 

The Wall Street Journal has been following up on  the controversy  out of Springfield, Ohio . That's where Donald Trump and JD Vance insist Haitian immigrants are stealing local dogs and cats and eating them.  As proof, JD Vance's staff sent Journal reporters a police report from a Springfield woman who accused her Haitian neighbors of stealing her cat in August.

But now, the cat's out of the bag.

When the Journal followed up with that Springfield woman ... she said  she  found her cat, and apologized to her neighbors for accusing them.
