Now, on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, As the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water. John seven, thirty seven and thirty eight. Dear God, we thank you for today being a father who forgives. Just like this woman who was caught sinning, we can find grace, love, and forgiveness in you. We can find the strength to live a life of purity as we trust and obey you. Thank you for the living water you give that never ever runs out. In Jesus's name.

You without sin cast the first stone in our last story, Jesus taught how he is the true bread of life. In this story, Jesus will frustrate the religious leaders as he continues to preach and call people to obedience. He will also forgive the woman who is caught in adultery, as inspired by the Gospels.

Hi, it's Julianne Thompson guest hosting for Julia Jeffrey Sadler. Welcome back for another story from the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Things are getting tense in Jerusalem and the Jewish leaders are not happy. Today. Will hear Jesus offer us what he calls living water and will meet a woman who, thanks to Jesus, will never be the same. Let's listen.

In Jesus came to Galilee but had to be very careful because some religious leaders wanted to kill him. But it was around the time for the Jewish festival of Tabernacles. His brothers said, go to Judea and get away from Galilee so your disciples can see your miracles. You shouldn't keep your miracles in private and hide it from others. You need to show yourself off to other people. At that time, his brothers did not truly believe in who he was Jesus told them, it is not yet my time. The world hates me because they think that what I am doing doing is evil. His brothers warned him not to stay in Galilee, but he went ahead and left for the festival after his brothers had already headed there. People at the festival were looking all over for Jesus. Some people said he is a good man, but others said no, he lies and tricks people. During the festival, Jesus went to the temple and started to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching and wondered how he had all this knowledge. The crowd realized that this is the man the religious leaders were trying to kill. Some sent for the religious leaders, and then the guards came looking for him. Jesus spoke to the people and said, I am only here with you for a small amount of time. Then I am going back to the one who sent me here. You will try to look for me, but you will not be able to see me. You will not be able to come to where I am. People were confused by what Jesus had said. They asked, where is he going and why will we not be able to see him? Why will we not be able to come. Not even the guards were able to arrest him because they were listening to his teachings. On the last day of the festival, Jesus said, all who are thirsty, come to me and drink. If you believe in me, there will be a river of water flowing within. People said after this, he must be a prophet. Others said, no, he is the messiah. When the guards returned to the religious leaders, they were asked, why did you not bring him? They replied, this man speaks unlike any other man. Early the next day, the religious leaders brought a woman who was in sin to Jesus. They wanted to trap him, and so they said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught sinning. The Law of Moses says that we are to stone her. What do you think we should do. Jesus did not answer, but he bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. The religious leaders kept asking questions until Jesus finally answered. He said, you without sin can cast the first stone. One by one, all the leaders dropped their stones and left. From the oldest to the youngest. Jesus said to the woman, woman, has no one condemned you? She answered no. He then said I do not condemn you go and live a life free of sin.

What aw story? Can't you just hear those stones dropping on the ground. There's a lot to talk about today. As we open, things are busy and crowded in Jerusalem because all the Jews are coming into town for a big party. It was called the Feast of the Booths, a festival they celebrated every year to remember how God provided for them during their forty years in the wilderness. At this festival, the Jews would stay in temporary shelters or booths for the week, bringing their offerings and sacrifices to the temple. But that wasn't all that was happening. Things were stirring because many Jewish leaders were looking for Jesus and wanted to kill him. They didn't like all this talk about being a king or godson or whatever else they had heard. They were angry, jealous, and didn't believe a word he said. The Bible tells us here that even the brothers of Jesus did not believe in him at this point his own brothers. How lonely Jesus must have felt. Jesus went to the temple as this festival began, and started teaching the people. Many of them did believe in him, but they just couldn't understand exactly what he was saying. Why is he going to go away? And why can't we come? The Bible says that even the guards that were sent to arrest him were so amazed by his teaching. Jesus told the people that they could come to him and drink, and that if they believed in him there would be a river of water flowing through them that never stopped. Now, just like the bread we talked about last time, this was not actual water.

It was life.

Jesus was saying, I can give you this amazing joy and purpose that will last forever, and all you have to do is come to me and ask for it. It seemed too good to be true, but it wasn't. Then we heard about the Pharisees interrupting Jesus's teaching to bring a woman to him. This woman had been doing things that were very wrong, and everyone knew it. She had a bad reputation and was not living the way God says to live. The leaders told Jesus that according to Jewish law, they were allowed to throw stones at her for what she did. If Jesus said, okay, you can. They would be breaking the Roman law, and the Romans were the ones in charge. But if Jesus said not to stone her, he wouldn't be following the law of Moses the law of the Jews. Either way, they thought this was their chance to trick them and arrest him, getting rid of him for good. And not to mention, they were acting very self righteous. That means they acted like they were perfect and so much better than this woman. It says, if she deserved all the punishment in the world, and they deserve to be rewarded. By the way, we can't act self righteous sometimes too, when we focus too much on someone else's sin instead of the things that we are doing, we act just like the Pharisees. Jesus wants us to look inside our own hearts and worry about ourselves much more than we can worry about what others are doing wrong. All right, So how did Jesus respond. If we've learned anything from these stories, it's that Jesus has his own special way of doing things that sometimes surprise us. Instead of answering these leaders, Jesus bent down and wrote something on the ground with his finger, we're not even sure what Jesus wrote, but John does tell.

Us what he said.

Okay, well, whichever one of you never sins and is perfect, go ahead and throw the first stone at her silence. They knew they messed up this time, and as hard as they tried, they weren't perfect. They couldn't keep all those laws all the time, so they dropped their stones and walked away. The last scene in the story is so special and powerful. It's just Jesus and the woman left standing there. She was probably so embarrassed and ashamed, and yet he looked right into her eyes. After they talk about how all the Pharisees left, he says, I don't condemn you either, go and sin no more. What did Jesus meant mean by that? To condemn someone means to stay in front of everyone. You're very wrong and bad, and you deserve to be punished. But even though Jesus said he was not going to condemn her, we can't forget the last part of this statement. He said that even though she was forgiven and loved by him, she needed to stop doing wrong and instead live her life in a way that was right. He wanted her to stop sinning and trust in him. That's the same thing he wants for us. Thank you for listening to today's story. Next time, Jesus is going to put some mud in someone's eyes, but it's for a good reason, you'll see. Okay, here we go. The Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story to you, and it's all true.
