The Borders of Canaan.
In our last story, we saw the people of Israel grumble to God about food and God made a point. In this story, we learn about how Moses decided to send men to go spy on the land of Canaan to see if they can enter the land. Caleb and Joshua said we can do it, but the others said it was too hard. Inspired by the Book of Numbers.
Hi, I'm Julia and welcome to the Kids Bible in New Year Podcast, I'm so glad you're here. Today, we get to hear the Bible story of what happened when Moses sent twelve hebrew spies to explore the land of Canaan. What did they discover? Let's find out out together.
When the Israelites finally made it to the outskirts of Canaan, God told Moses to send twelve men to see what the land was like. So Moses decided to take one man from each tribe of Israel. He told the men to go into the land and to observe everything, then bring back a report. Moses then told them to bring back the fruit that grew in the land. The men stayed in Canaan for forty days.
When they came back, two.
Of them carried a bunch of grapes. When the men were talking to Moses about what they saw, ten of the men said, the land is beautiful. It has plenty of fruit. And food. The only thing is that the people who live there are terrifying. They are massive and strong. They'll destroy us in battle. There's no way we can conquer the land. The other two men, Caleb and Joshua, told a different story. We have to go and conquer the land. We can definitely do it.
We have God on our side.
The ten yelled back at them, No, we can't attack these people. Didn't you hear us. They're strong, they will crush us. The Israelites were scared when they heard the stories and turned to Moses in anger and confusion. Did God bring us here to die? We almost died in Egypt, and now the people of Canaan will kill us and take our wives and children. You're not a good leader. We're going to find someone new to lead us and go back to Egypt. Joshua and Caleb ran out in front of the others and grabbed them. No, the land is amazing and the Lord will give it to us. Don't just run away because you're scared. We have to trust the Lord. We have to trust that he will protect us. He will defend us against these people. We can do it. Israelites didn't like this, so they threatened Joshua and Caleb. Then God showed up at the tabernacle. God told Moses, how long will they refuse to believe me? After everything I've done to show them I care and love them. They saw what I did in Egypt and all the miracles I made happen, but they still don't trust me. So because they don't trust me and refuse to follow my commands, they won't see the promised Land. I'm going to bring them back to the wilderness for forty years until they die. Every one who is twenty years or older will not see the promised land, but their children will Caleb and Joshua, because of their trust, they will also go into Canaan. After the forty years, the land will be theirs. Moses relayed the message to the Israelites and.
The people became upset.
The ten men who said bad things about Canaan suddenly became sick and died the next morning. The people said, we were wrong. We realized we sinned and we should have listened. We know better now, and we are going to go into Canaan. As God said, we will defeat the people of Canaan. Moses looked at them, no it's too late. Now. The Lord is sending you into the wilderness. Don't disobey him again. If you go into Canaan to fight, you will lose because God won't be going with you. Some of the Israelites did it anyways, and they were defeated. Many of them died in battle, and the rest came back embarrassed. So the Israelites went into the wilderness and stayed there for forty years. All of the adults who were saved from Egypt were destined to die in the wilderness. Even though God was upset with them, he stayed with them and met their needs. He made sure that their clothes and shoes didn't get old, and he gave them food every day.
Whoa giants shoes and clothes that didn't wear out even after forty years. Today's story is wild and adventurous, but there's one word that describes today's story best, and that word is faithfulness. Do you know what faithfulness means? Faithfulness is when you stand beside someone no matter what, God has shown faithfulness to the children of Israel, hasn't he Yes, he read rescued them from Pharaoh and from the Amalekites when they were scared. He fed the manna and quail when they were hungry, and provided water in the desert when they were thirsty. He taught them how to live the best kind of life, and visited them in the tent of meeting. Even when they were complaining, God stayed by their side because He had made promises to their great great, great, great, a whole bunch more great grandfathers, Isaac, Abraham, and Jacob. And God always keeps his promises. God has already kept his promises to Jacob has Any when Jacob's family of seventy people went down into Egypt. God brought a great nation of over six hundred thousand people out of Egypt, just like he said he would. And God promised both Abraham and Isaac that they're great, great, great great, a whole bunch more greats grandchildren would live in the land of Canaan, the promised land flowing with milk and honey that God has been leading the Israelites to since they left Egypt. Do you think he'll keep that promise too? Yep? Why? Because God is faithful and he always does what he says he'll do. So, when Moses sent twelve spies to explore Canaan, and all twelve came back and said, God promised us this land. He's always faithful, so it's as good as ours. Right wrong. Only two spies said that. Only two spies remembered God's faithfulness, Joshua and Caleb. The other ten spies said, the land is beautiful and the food is so amazing. It took two of us to carry this huge amount of food on our shoulders. But we can't go in. They're giants, and to them, we're the size of grasshoppers. We're scared. And so all the Israelites turned against the ten spies and said, no, God will go with us. He's bigger than the giants. Right wrong. Only three people said that. Joshua, Caleb, and Moses. The other Israelites were frightened, and then they were angry. In fact, they wanted to kick Moses out, pick a new leader, and go back to Egypt. After all of God's faithfulness to the Israelites, they were not faithful to him, not even a little bit. God was very disappointed. But one thing about God is that he stays faithful even when his people do not. And he was going to keep his promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that their great great, great great a whole bunch more great grandchildren will live in the land of Canaan. But God would not allow one single person who had seen all of his miracles coming out of Egypt, except for Joshua and Caleb, to go in. They would stay in the desert and their children would get to go into the promised land instead. So for the next forty long years, the Israelites wandered around the desert. They walked through the hot, hot sand instead of enjoying the cool, green land God had waiting for them. And even then God was faithful to the Israelites. He gave them food and kept their shoes and clothes from getting holes or wearing out. The truth is God can defeat any giant, and he has wonderful things waiting for us, But He wants us to trust him and to believe in his faithfulness. I'm so glad you join me for today's story.
