When Esa heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, bless me even me, also my father, Genesis twenty seven thirty four. Dear God, we know that you have good plans for our lives. Thank you, But sometimes we try to control your plans rather than trusting in them. Even then, you still love us. Thank you for blessing us even when we don't deserve it. Show us what your grace is like. As we read today's Bible story about Jacob and his brother Esau, in Jesus's name, I pray Amen.

Jacob and Esau. Before this story, we learned Abraham had died and was buried with Sarah. Isaac and Rebecca had twins named Jacob and Esau. Esau the older twins, sold his birthright to Jacob for some stew. Now we will learn about Rebeccah and Jacob tricking Isaac into giving Jacob his blessing inspired by the Book of Genesis.

Hi, I'm Julia, and welcome to the Kid's Bible. In New Year Podcast today, we get to hear the Bible story of how Jacob dressed up in goat skin to trick his dad and take his brother Esau's blessing. What how did that even work? Let's find out together.

During a period of famine, Isaac escaped to Jerrar, and Isaac, just like his father Abraham, lied about Rebecca being his sister in this land because he feared being killed.

And yet he grew rich there because he.

Stayed in Jerrar instead of going to Egypt, just as the Lord commanded. Because of his wealth, King Abemelech sent him away. God then restated the promise he made to Abraham again to Isaac. And so Isaac made an altar and dug wells, and at Beersheba, the Lord blessed him. A little while later, Isaac was getting so old that he could no longer open his eyes to see. So he called his oldest son, Esau and said to him, my son. Esau replied, here I am. Isaac explained to him that he was getting old and knew he was going to die soon. He said, go get your bow and arrow and go out to the country and hunt down an animal for me. Make me the food I like to eat, and bring it to me so I can eat it and give you my blessing before I die. Rebecca, Isaac's wife, was listening while Isaac was telling this to Esau. So while Esau was gone hunting, Rebecca went to her other son, Jacob, and told him what his father had told Esau. So Rebecca told Jacob to go out and pick any two goats of his choice and bring them to her so she could prepare them them just the way Isaac likes them. Then she told him take it to your father to eat, so that he will give you the blessing instead of Esau. Then Jacob told his mother Rebecca, Esau is a hairy man, and I have smooth skin.

If Isaac touches me, he.

Will know that I am not Esau and will bring a curse upon me. Then Rebecca said to Jacob, I will take the curse upon myself.

Now go do what I say.

So Jacob went out and got the goats and brought them to his mother, and she prepared tasty food just like Isaac liked it. Rebecca took some of Esau's best clothes that he had in the house and she put them on Jacob. She then took goat's skin and covered up Jacob's smooth arms and neck and handed him the food to take to his father. Jacob went to Isaac and said, my father. Isaac replied and saying.

Who is it. I am Esau, your firstborn son, and I have done what you have told.

Me, So get up and eat so you may give me your blessing. Isaac asked how did you find the animal so quickly? Because the Lord gave me success. Then Isaac said, come here so I can touch your skin and make sure you are my son Esau. Jacob got closer and Isaac said, your voice sounds like Jacob, but your skin is like Esau. Isaac did not recognize that it wasn't Esau because Jacob had on the goat skin, so Isaac continued to bless Jacob. Then Isaac asked, are you really my son, Esau, Yes, I am, Jacob replied, then bring me the food so I can bless you. Isaac ate the food and told him to come nearer so he could kiss him. So Jacob went and kissed his father, and Isaac smelled him and said, the smell of you is like the smell of a field. May God give you Earth's riches and great amount of grain and wine. May Nation serve you and bow down to you, and you will be the lord over your brothers. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed. After Isaac blessed Jacob, he left, and Esau returned and prepared the food for his father and brought it to him. Esau went to Isaac and said, father, get up and eat the food I prepared for you, so you can bless me. Isaac was confused and said who are you, and Esau said it is me, Esau, your oldest son. Isaac became very upset and started crying and said, some one came to me before you and prepared food for me. And I ate his food and blessed him.

Esa began to cry and said to Isaac, bless me too. Isaac said, your brother.

Has lied to me and took your blessing. Esau said, this is the second time he has taken advantage of me. He took my birthright and now he's taken my blessing.

Then he asked, do you have any blessing you can still give me? Isaac told Esau, you will serve your brother all your life.

Esau was so angry that he decided that when his father dies that he would kill Jacob.

When Rebecca heard this, she told Jacob and asked him to leave the city and to stay with her brother Laban and wait until his brother had calmed down.

Talk about a trickster. Can you believe Jacob did that. What's worse, it was his mom's idea. She wanted Jacob to get Isaac's blessing and not Esau. In those days, a father's final blessing was super important. It was like a powerful prayer over a child's future. But it was much more than just wishing for good things to happen to them. It was like agreeing with God's plans for what would happen. Now, do you think Rebecca and Jacob really needed to lie and cheat for God's plans to come?

True.

No, as we heard in our Bible story, God had made the same promises to Isaac that he'd made to Abraham. They didn't need to worry about anything. The whole family was part of God's special plan. But there's a big difference between God having plans and us trying to control God's plans. Jacob and Rebecca tried to control God's plans. God had every right to choose Jacob to carry on the special promises he'd made. That didn't mean you saw couldn't be part of God's plans. And it didn't mean Rebecca or Jacob had to trick and scheme to make God's plans happen. What could everyone have done instead of all those tricks and lies fighting. It rhymes with rust, and it starts with tea, that's right.

Trust.

They could have trusted God. One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Proverbs three five through six. It says, trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways, acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight. Do you know what God's saying to you in those verses. He's saying, I've got you kiddo, whatever problem you're facing, whatever fear you're fighting, whatever has you worried, don't try to figure it out yourself. Instead, trust me. I know you might feel a little lost and a little scared, but if you trust me, I'll show you the way. Maybe today you're worried about something at school, Trust God. Maybe you're scared about something happening in your family. Trust God. Maybe you don't know what to do about something going on with your friends, Trust God. Say to yourself, I'm not going to give in to my fear. I'm going to trust God. Then pray to God. Say God, I know you're good, I know that you love me, and I know you have good plans for me. I need you right now, so I'm going to trust you no matter what. It would have been a good idea for Jacob to do that instead of lying, because, as we've already seen, sin always comes with consequences, and Jacob's were bad. Think about it. He hurt his brother, he disrespected as father, and he had to leave his home because of the pain he'd caused, Jacob said, and nearly tore his family apart. That doesn't sound like much of a blessing to me. But here's where God comes into this story and does something none of us would expect. He doesn't abandon Jacob or forget all the good promises he made to Jacob's family. Next time, we'll hear a Bible story about how God met Jacob when he is at as a lowist. When Jacob was tired, sad, and guilty because of all his sins, God showed up and said, I'm not done with you yet, Jacob. I still love you and I've got plans for your life. It's a beautiful picture of what's called grace. I'm so glad you joined me today. Come back next time to hear an incredible story about a stairway that reaches all the way to Heaven.
