Sir Don McKinnon, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand and Secretary General of the Commonwealth, came to know Queen Elizabeth well during his eight years as Commonwealth Secretary General. Sir Don received his Knighthood from the Queen and they came to be personal friends.
