Neurodivergent children who engage in harmful sexual behaviours: an overseas perspective with Kevin Creeden

View descriptionShare

This is the 19th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe.

In this episode we’re going to get an overseas perspective on how to help and treat children who are showing harmful sexual behaviours. We speak with Kevin Creeden from The Whitney Academy in Massachusetts about their unique approach. As Kevin explains in this episode, children stay in the Whitney Academy for treatment by living in the residential program if they have shown problematic sexual behaviours. He estimates about half of the children in the program are neurodivergent, and so he now specialises in helping neurodivergent children navigate the sexual spectrum by focussing on what is healthy sexuality. Kevin says this is crucial to help them learn from their experience and be able to return to their families and communities with new skills and understanding of what is appropriate.

It’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours.

Each episode of this series will feature practical insights on how to teach your child safety in the world today.
