German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to do everything in his power to protect Jewish life in Germany.

His comments came the far-left Die Linke party came first in Berlin's state election despite facing allegations of antisemitism and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won the most votes in another state in the east of the country , with the Merz’s Christian Democrats CDU failing even to reach the threshold to stay in the state parliament.

Merz vowed to keep his ruling coalition together for the sake of his country's "democratic future", following the resounding defeats for his party in two state elections.
