What happens when faith alone isn't enough to pull you out of depression? In this episode of Just Heal with Dr. Jay, Dr. Jay Barnett sits down with Pastor Phillip Anthony Mitchell for a powerful conversation about faith, mental health, and the struggles often hidden behind the pulpit. Mitchell opens up about a devastating betrayal in 2017 that triggered a five-year battle with depression, revealing how counseling, medication, and accountability helped him heal when prayer alone wasn't enough. He also discusses a past suicide attempt, the stigma surrounding mental health in the church, and why pastors and spiritual leaders must embrace vulnerability rather than suffer in silence.

The conversation explores the role of suffering in spiritual growth, overcoming temptation, recognizing destructive habits, and replacing unhealthy vices with prayer and self-awareness. Mitchell also introduces his upcoming book, Contend, challenging Christians to fight for their faith while confronting their own internal battles. From the importance of community and scripture to the dangers of ignoring personal struggles, Dr. Jay and Pastor Mitchell deliver a candid discussion about depression, healing, accountability, and finding purpose through pain—reminding listeners that failure should be a classroom, not a coffin.
