Joan Esposito is joined by Michael Hawthorne, Pulitzer-finalist investigative reporter who focuses on the environment and public health for the Chicago Tribune.

The discussion examined the environmental and public health risks of plastic pollution, the limits of recycling, and policy options for reducing plastic waste. Here are a few key points from the conversation:
- Illinois now recognizes nurdles, small pre-production plastic pellets, as a pollutant; they are widespread in the Great Lakes and can be mistaken for food by fish.
- Hawthorne described evidence that microplastics and nanoplastics are present throughout the human body, while animal studies suggest possible links to serious health problems.
- The plastics industry has historically used tactics associated with other industries: denying risks, delaying action, and shifting responsibility to consumers.
- Plastic products often contain different polymers and additives, making recycling difficult and frequently uneconomical; paper and aluminum are more reliably recyclable.
- Extended producer responsibility laws and bottle-deposit programs aim to incentivize producers to use more recyclable materials, but their effectiveness and broader adoption remain limited.
- Scientists remain skeptical that microplastics can be removed from the human body through chelation-like treatments.
