He served a career in the military—both enlisted and as an officer—and survived the attack on the Pentagon on 9/11. He has long been involved in community service, including as a Big Brother and as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children. Hoffman has been elected to public office three times, serving on the City Council, School Board, and in the State Senate. He has earned recognition from organizations such as Concerned Women for America and the Conservative Political Action Conference.   Hoffman said he intends to run an issue-focused campaign centered on responsible government and transparency. He has advocated for fiscal discipline, tax restraint, and term limits, previously serving as chair of South Dakotans for Term Limits. “The best ideas in government rarely come from within government,” Hoffman said. “They come from conversations with the people we serve.” Hoffman is a widower and lives on a farm near Hartford, where he remains active in the community. He holds several degrees, including an MBA from the University of South Dakota. He is also the author of Life After—a biography of his late wife—and Bailey: A Wonderful Life. Although this week is maybe not quite as nice as some days we’ve had this month, at least we aren’t having the dramatic fluctuations between a few inches of snow followed by temps in the 90s. With those nice days though, people have indeed been getting into the spring cleaning activities I discussed the last time I was on and, likewise, there’s been aches and pains. However, some of the things I’ve been seeing lately have reminded me that what I expect to be treating at certain times of the year aren’t always things patients expect to have treated.     Pretty much everyone, even without having been to a chiropractor before, knows that chiropractors work on the spine. However, some people think chiropractors *only* work on the spine. There is, to an extent, a reason for that belief, which I can go into, but for the most part, chiropractors can and do work on just about every joint in the body. Some of the most common non-spinal ones I see are hips, shoulders, knees, elbows, wrists, and ankles. One of the stories I most bring up on this topic is a patient I saw who came in for low back pain and after going through the case history, I asked if he had any other notable aches or pains or health concerns and he replied, “Just this bad shoulder, but you can’t do anything about that.” So I asked him why not and what was going on with it and could already see the gears turning in his head before he replied rhetorically, “Yeah. Why can’t you do anything about that?” So I worked on his back and worked on his shoulder and his back was doing a bit better when he got up, but in the case of his shoulder, he said it was the best it had been in 2 years.       He even started to tear up a little bit as he was kicking himself because he had gone to other chiropractors in that time which also gave relief for his recurrent back pain, but he simply had never brought up his shoulder to them before.      Most of the cases I’ve been seeing recently have been the lower extremity as people are just starting to get out more regularly for walking, jogging, and biking as well as being down on knees clearing out brush in gardens. Though I’ve had a few people with shoulder issues come in as well, especially those busy with indoor spring cleaning and reaching upwards or working overhead      It should be noted though that a lot of aches and pains in shoulders and hips aren’t necessarily coming from there. They may be stemming from radiating pain from the neck or lower back, respectively. In those cases, although local pain in the neck or low back is the norm, it’s not a requirement for radiating pain to be present. This is one of the many reasons a case history is so important. If someone comes in with shoulder pain and it began immediately after a particular throw after their first softball practice, I’m going to lean toward the shoulder itself being the culprit. If shoulder pain came on seemingly out of nowhere and doesn’t worsen with any particular motions, probably stemming from the neck. In either case, it’s not a guarantee, however. As such, in both cases most chiropractors will check both the neck and shoulder.       This is to not only find the origin, but also any compensations, as well as because most health care professionals are taught to both listen to and ignore “the rule of parsimony” at the same time and with good reason. One final thing I’d like to bring up when it comes to extremities and people being unsure if chiropractors can do anything for it is the jaw. Most of the time even dentists try to avoid dealing with any jaw issues  unless they’re at the point where surgery is recommended and most dentists I’ve gone to since I became a chiropractor have asked if I do work on jaws and if they can refer in to me. I definitely take a less-is- more approach to working on the jaw, but it is indeed yet another joint that I and many other chiropractors can help with. For example:   Des Moines only recently passed $1B in permit value for the first time in its fiscal year ending in 2025.   Sioux Falls, by comparison, has sustained that level multiple years in a row, which signals ongoing investment rather than a one-time spike.   Population Growth Supports the Construction Boom   Construction activity is closely tied to population growth.   Sioux Falls: Added about 5,000 residents in 2025.   Population reached ~224,676 people.   Since 2018, the city has added over 42,000 residents.       That’s roughly 23% population growth in eight years, which is very strong for a Midwestern city.    For comparison:   Many Midwest cities grow 0.3–1% annually. In addition to earning Master of Artsdegrees in Divinity, Counseling, and Management, he has received a Doctorate degree in Ministry and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology. He has authored six books beginning with his autobiography, From the Hood to the Hill (2006), The Blessing of Adversity (2011), Nothing to Fear (2017), Make Your Voice Heard in Heaven (2018), and Bible Wisdom for Better Living (2019). When it comes to fiscal responsibility, we are second to none,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “This is the 137th year in a row that we have delivered a balanced budget! ProStart is a national program that teaches high school students how the restaurant industry really works,from cooking to running a restaurant.There were 3 different categories to compete in ManagementTeams create a proposal from scratch, covering all business aspects, including menu, marketing, and operations, which they present to a panel of industry experts.Culinary culinary teams compete by preparing a three-course, gourmet meal in 60 minutes using only two butane burners, with no electricity or running water. Judged by industry professionals on taste, skill, teamwork, safety, and sanitation, students must demonstrate precision, speed, and creativityCake Decoratingdesign, assemble, and decorate a cake within a strict,  65-minute timeframe, demonstrating skills in icing, piping, and theme execution What the Competition Was Like We had to cook a full three-course meal in 60 minutes  with just 2 portable burners, and we had to plate it like a professional restaurant.Everyone has a purpose on our  team. Christian Stanley is in charge of the Starter, Seared Scallops. Tanir Taylor is in charge of out Entree, a Duck Brest with saffron rice. Emma Robertson is  in charge of our dessert, a Hibiscus Poached Pear.  Zoe Kinney is  our floater which means she is helping anyone that needs it and  she was in charge of our knife cuts. We competed against 10 teamsWe got to the Ramkota at 7:30 tuesday morning   3/10/26 How Much Work Went Into It In preparation for State we had done 5 practices over the course of about 2 months We started out a bit rough mainly because some of our team including myself had never competed before I wore a bodycam throughout all of our practices to record and document our progress along the way and there was only 1 tiny Fire One member had only gotten to practice 2 times before state due to some unforeseen circumstances and i think that he pulled it off and did a great jobThe hardest part, I think, was trying to stay calm. The judges had said that we looked really calm and i dont think that any of us were feeling that way in the end. We were so nervous during the awards. And it really didn't hit me until I got home that we won. I think that this is a great way for the seniors( Tanir, Zoe) to finish out the year with the opportunities to make these wonderful memories What Happens Next We are going to compete at Nationals in Baltimore April 24 - 26We have all received Scholarships to some culinary schools  Well visit with Dailyn Kiner—from Mitchell----one of our winners next    In this introductory ProStart Management events with Culinary and hospitality management skills----   9:16/00—KELO Commercials 9:18/00---Biz Show 2 Dailyn Kiner---Mitchell is the first of the winners we are talking with this morning----   I'm Dailyn Kiner from Mitchell High School and I competed in Cake and Culinary and won first in cake decorating for the second year in a row at the ProStart Invitational in Pierre   Specially in the cake decorating competition, you come with your cake already baked, filled and crumb coated and you get 65 minutes to complete it. I decided to do a chocolate coffee cake this year with a salted caramel crumble for the filling.   This year's theme was "Under the Sea" so all of the decorators had to come up with their own unique designs. I wanted to do my favorite sea animals so I had a whale breaching out of the top, a squid on the side and a whale shark on the other side. All of my decorations were made from marshmallow fondant and were made to look as realistic as possible. I also had fondant waves up the side of the second tier. For added decoration, I made sea shells, stars, corals and seaweed as well as much more.   I said earlier that this is my second year doing it, which is the cap and also because I'm graduating this year but ProStart has been awesome for me. I love doing all the designing and planning for the worksheets as well as actually going to competition and feeling the rush of time getting down to the wire. I love a good competition and especially with how amazing everyone did this year! It was definitely a jump up from last year!  I'm sending you a photo of my cake as well just in case you don't have it but would like to ask about it! Thank you so much! Poor walking mechanics Don’t just cause discomfort; they compound over time. Research shows that gait abnormalities are present in up to 60% of adults, and many people don’t discover an issue until it’s already affecting their daily mobility. Warning signs of a problematic gait pattern ○ Pain during walking (in the joints, low back, or pain that increases with distance) ○ Limping ○ Foot dragging ○ Excessive swaying or leaning ○ Toe walking ○ Frequent tripping Simple self-assessments anyone can do at home as they become more active this spring ○ Walk barefoot across a room and have someone film you (or film yourself) ○ What to look for: Are your steps even? Time how long you balance (eyes open). ■ Healthy general benchmarks: Under 40 yrs: 30+ seconds 40–60 yrs: 20+ seconds 60+: 10–20 seconds   The American College of Cardiology found that even light, low-intensity walking is associated with a 27% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular-related death compared to sedentary individuals. With spring being the season most people naturally return to outdoor activity, it’s the ideal time to examine whether the way you walk could be either extending or quietly shortening your life. Proper gait can reduce impact forces on the knee by up to 50%, according to biomechanics research out of Harvard—a critical factor for the millions of Americans dealing with knee pain or arthritis. Gait speed alone has been identified by researchers as a reliable predictor of longevity in older adults, with slower walkers showing significantly higher rates of decline. Simple corrections to walking mechanics—foot strike, posture, stride length—can meaningfully reduce cumulative joint stress over thousands of daily steps. People need to be aware that they don’t need to be tied together.  For example, the best rates for a first time homebuyer whether VA, Conventional or FHA is SD Housing.  You have to have a brick and mortar in the state to be able to offer SD Housing.   Zillow does not have it so if you are a first time homebuyer working with a Zillow Realtor there is a very good chance you will never be informed of SD Housing options.  This is a severe detriment to a homebuyer.  Hopefully, the lawsuit fixes the problem but I wanted people to know about this issue.   Zillow Lawsuit: The most significant case involves allegations that Zillow violated federal law by using illegal kickbacks to pressure real estate agents into steering homebuyers toward Zillow Home Loans (ZHL). Lead plaintiff Araba Armstrong, a first-time homebuyer from Anchorage, Alaska, claims she purchased her home in 2024 through a Zillow-affiliated agent and believed she was obligated to use Zillow Home Loans for her mortgage. The lawsuit targets Zillow’s Premier Agent program and its connection to Zillow Home Loans. Participating agents who pay or earn access to consumer leads through Premier Agent were allegedly assessed by Zillow using metrics related to its home loans program, requiring agents to meet specific ZHL pre-approval quotas as a condition of program participation.   Dave warned Bill about Zillow and Veterans United steering borrowers toward affiliated lenders. Zillow allegedly pressures agents via Premier Agent metrics tied to Zillow Home Loans quotas. They use technology to change the phone number that appears on your caller ID. So the name and number you see might not be real. The program is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas to become great places to live for all residents. Since 2017, AARP has funded 2,100 projects by nonprofit organizations and government entities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands – including more than $414,000 through 40 projects in South Dakota communities. AARP South Dakota collaborates with communities across the state, bringing people together and providing resources and expertise to help make South Dakota an even better place to live for people of all ages. Past community challenge grants across the state have supported safe walking and biking trails, park improvement projects, community gardens and more.         AARP SD Watching Important Issues at the State Capitol – Including Virtual Currency Kiosk Fraud    AARP South Dakota maintains a presence at the State Capitol in Pierre to monitor issues important to South Dakotans 50-plus and their families. This session, we’re watching issues like property taxes, access to health care, voting access, services for older adults like home care and consumer protection. We enjoyed a great victory yesterday with the passage of Senate Bill 98 (SB98), which now goes to Governor Rhoden for his signature. This bill will add safeguards around Virtual Currency Kiosks to help prevent fraud. SB98 does not prevent the lawful use of virtual currency kiosks, but it does add common-sense safeguards, including clear fee disclosures, daily transaction limits, posted fraud warnings, required receipts and licensing for kiosk operators.       AARP South Dakota led a broad coalition of South Dakota financial organizations and law enforcement officials to advance this bill, which also enjoyed the support of the South Dakota Division of Banking and the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office.    Remember that the Sioux Falls Local Election is June 2 – Mayoral Forum Coming Up In past years, city residents would be getting ready to go to the polls in April to elect a new mayor and city council members. However, because of a law passed during the 2025 legislative session in Pierre, municipal elections must now align with either the June primary or November general election.  Sioux Falls opted for the June primary date, so we’ll be choosing our next mayor on June 2.  AARP South Dakota is collaborating with Downtown Sioux Falls to present a mayoral forum on March 24 -  just three weeks away – to give residents the first chance to hear from candidates. Watch for more information coming soon on how to livestream the event on both the AARP South Dakota and Downtown Sioux Falls social channels.     Are You Approaching 65 with Questions about Social Security and Medicare?  AARP South Dakota Has Answers.   ------Mary Michaels---thanks for the update---Next---Dr. Joshua Jorde----Chiropractic chatter and what he can share after Fox Business News on the Half – Hour..   9:29/00—KELO Commercials 9:30/30---fox bizzz-news 9:32/30---Wellness Wednesday 3 ----Welcome back to our Working on Wellness Wednesday---this chiropractor visits with us a couple times each month—and we are happy to have—Dr. Joshua Jorde –joining us---     Quite the interesting reminders and hopes for our listeners from you today-------   We’re on our way into spring even if it seems to be a leap forward and then a few steps back with the wild temperature changes. Still, I’m hearing a lot more patients bring up spring cleaning both in and outside the home.    Cleaning out pantries, emptying closets, clearing out yard brush, etc. are all things that can be a bit of a strain in general, but especially after a winter of sitting comfy and cozy without being as physically active.  Some things to help avoid the pitfalls of jumping into new projects, especially ones that can be a bit labor intensive anyway, are first and foremost to stretch before working on a project that you know is going to be mostly physical and take a half hour or more.  Going to be mostly physical and take a half hour or more. Even just a simple limbering up by going through ranges of motions for the body parts you’ll be using, legs or arms, as well as the neck and back in general, will significantly reduce the likelihood of minor injuries.     It’s also important to make sure you’re being safe in general depending on what you’re getting up to.    Think of the tasks you’ll be doing especially if repetitive and what could reasonably go wrong. For example, I had a patient just the other day cleaning out all the cupboards in the kitchen and she’s a little on the shorter side herself, so she was constantly up and down a step ladder. In that case, make sure that you do move it each time you go up or down as needed rather than trying to reach over to the side and risk straining yourself, or worse, falling. Or if going up and down stairs repeatedly such as to store things in the basement, make sure that you don’t carry too much that falling down stairs with that extra weight on top of you could be a real problem. Also make sure you aren’t wearing socks that could maybe slip since you know you’ll be going up and down more than usual.     Or if taking things out of storage that you haven’t even seen in years, get a good idea of how heavy bin or tote you’re dealing with before trying to pull it out so as to avoid over or underestimating it and straining yourself. I know I’ve pulled on totes that I forgot were only full of stuffed animals and nearly fell backward and I’ve also pulled on totes that ended up being full of books and strained myself by trying to tug quickly instead of a slower, yet more forceful pull with my back protected.     When it comes to outdoor work, many of the same rules apply, especially being aware of what you’re doing and where you’re going. Be aware of wet leaves, mud patches, loose roots or branches, etc. especially if up or down any hills.     When dealing with tree limbs, again it’s better to get down and reposition a ladder than to try and ‘make it work’ by leaning and reaching. Likewise, proper gear is also important. If on ones knees clearing out a garden bad, knee pads while be very important. Work gloves will be equally so if dealing with wood or dry brambles. If you aren’t worried about getting a good grip to avoid slivers or thorns, you can focus more on keeping your back, knees, and shoulders stable when working and lifting, after all.      Finally, one thing that’s important with either task is to take breaks. For very heavy duty activities, try and take a one minute breather every 15 minutes or so. The nice temperatures have contributed to people thinking about moving or buying a home. We can do just about anything with that product. Many times we are also looking at a 20 year loan product rather than going back to a 30 year product because many people that are renovating are in their 40’s+ If you are 62+--the HECM is an excellent product to help with renovations. Using your home equity to improve your home and payments are optional!   Older homeowners –55-74 are largest group renovating—they make up nearly 60% of renovating homeowners according to the Houzz Study Bathrooms and kitchens –why wouldn’t you use a HECM loan to improve your home? But on the plus side, we’re at least mostly out of the period of long lasting ice on the ground and having to be careful about slips and falls. Since it’s not really the right time of year to talk about any specific seasonal injuries, I thought I’d go into detail a little bit today on something that makes us unique at Jorde Chiropractic Clinic. Often on here I try and give general advice as well as encourage people to go to chiropractors in general since I know with broadcasts, the signal can certainly get far enough away that it reaches some people who may be a little too far away to come see us. However, at least on occasion it might be good for listeners to hear how we do things at our own clinic. While I talked about the ARPwave therapy not terribly long ago, it’s been a while since I last talked about what really sets us apart; manual muscle testing. Every muscle in the body is controlled by specific nerves. Likewise, each of those nerves are formed by multiple nerve roots as they exit the spine. Some nerves or even individual muscles controlled by these nerves are very much controlled by one nerve root substantially more than the others. Because of this fact, physicians have long been able to identify if there is an issue with a particular nerve root by testing individual muscles in ways that isolate the individual muscle in question which itself also is controlled primarily by a single nerve. Note that I say physicians and not just chiropractors because manual muscle testing hearkens back all the way to the days of Hippocrates. He’s the ancient Greek physician for whom we get the term Hippocratic Oath, by the way. Today, not as many physicians make use of muscle testing due to the main drawback being that it’s a bit tough and takes a lot of practice to get a good feel for muscle testing in the first place and these days there are quite a few tests that are just a bit easier especially in regards to what most doctors needed muscle testing for back in the day; determining if the issue was stemming from a single nerve root or if it was from a named nerve. Nowadays, the medical doctors who most use manual muscle testing regularly are neurologists and orthopedic surgeons. In chiropractic specifically, however, there are multiple benefits to manual muscle testing. Not only does it tell if there is spinal nerve impingement, but by moving the body at the affected spinal levels, We’re able to determine what direction the impingement is coming from and, by extension, the most appropriate way to correct it. We can likewise tell if it’s perhaps not a chiropractic situation at all if unable to find motion or direction that improves the strength and are therefore able to refer accordingly. What patients most seem to like though, is the fact that it clearly demonstrates there is a problem and also that it got corrected once the strength returns in the post check. It’s no longer some esoteric thing where the doctor says, “Ah, I see” and then “got it” after the adjustment while the patient just has to trust the doctor knows what they’re looking at and doing. Which is generally a safe bet anyway, of course, but it’s still nice for the patients to know and not feel left out of the loop. So while I encourage anyone with aches or pains of the spine, shoulders, knees, headaches, et. In the U.S., jot down your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS before you file your return. This is a six-digit number confirming your identity and your Social Security number. It is important to note that you cannot opt out once you get an IP PIN. So, once you apply, you must provide the IP Pin each year when you file your federal tax returns. The IRS will provide your IP PIN online and then send you a new IP PIN each December by postal mail. I have. the resilience that some of these athletes are showing, even while the war is tearing their country and families apart. That's what the Olympics have always been about. but i wish it was also about peace. Did you know russia is not allowed to compete as a country? because of their war on ukraine. That's a win in my eyes. Some russian athletes are still competing as independent athletes, but you will not see russian flag raised or their anthem sung.   Ukraine's energy grid is attacked daily. You can see for yourself if you look up the current situation in Kiev for example, but it's all cities and villages around the country. Ukraine has opened something called "resilience points", where you can come in, charge your phone, warm up, have some hot tea or coffee, maybe even a warm meal. Otherwise the electricity is divided up and provided several hours each day, sometimes the only time you have power is a few hours during the night, when you wake up and try to warm up your home, cook some meals, shower, etc.   while here, in SD - many ukrainians are blessed to be safe. They all value and appreciate that. What they are faced with at the same time is administrative delays, forcing them to quit jobs and even consider leaving the country. Many bind together, look for support and wait the delays out. While we are working to expedite these work authorizations one at a time, I wish there was a bigger fix. These people are here legally, they have already proven themselves in communities and at work, but every year they have to reapply for work authorization, pay fees.
