The program is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas to become great places to live for all residents. Since 2017, AARP has funded 2,100 projects by nonprofit organizations and government entities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands – including more than $414,000 through 40 projects in South Dakota communities. AARP South Dakota collaborates with communities across the state, bringing people together and providing resources and expertise to help make South Dakota an even better place to live for people of all ages. Past community challenge grants across the state have supported safe walking and biking trails, park improvement projects, community gardens and more.         AARP SD Watching Important Issues at the State Capitol – Including Virtual Currency Kiosk Fraud    AARP South Dakota maintains a presence at the State Capitol in Pierre to monitor issues important to South Dakotans 50-plus and their families. This session, we’re watching issues like property taxes, access to health care, voting access, services for older adults like home care and consumer protection. We enjoyed a great victory yesterday with the passage of Senate Bill 98 (SB98), which now goes to Governor Rhoden for his signature. This bill will add safeguards around Virtual Currency Kiosks to help prevent fraud. SB98 does not prevent the lawful use of virtual currency kiosks, but it does add common-sense safeguards, including clear fee disclosures, daily transaction limits, posted fraud warnings, required receipts and licensing for kiosk operators.       AARP South Dakota led a broad coalition of South Dakota financial organizations and law enforcement officials to advance this bill, which also enjoyed the support of the South Dakota Division of Banking and the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office.    Remember that the Sioux Falls Local Election is June 2 – Mayoral Forum Coming Up In past years, city residents would be getting ready to go to the polls in April to elect a new mayor and city council members. However, because of a law passed during the 2025 legislative session in Pierre, municipal elections must now align with either the June primary or November general election.  Sioux Falls opted for the June primary date, so we’ll be choosing our next mayor on June 2.  AARP South Dakota is collaborating with Downtown Sioux Falls to present a mayoral forum on March 24 -  just three weeks away – to give residents the first chance to hear from candidates. Watch for more information coming soon on how to livestream the event on both the AARP South Dakota and Downtown Sioux Falls social channels.     Are You Approaching 65 with Questions about Social Security and Medicare?  AARP South Dakota Has Answers.   ------Mary Michaels---thanks for the update---Next---Dr. Joshua Jorde----Chiropractic chatter and what he can share after Fox Business News on the Half – Hour..   9:29/00—KELO Commercials 9:30/30---fox bizzz-news 9:32/30---Wellness Wednesday 3 ----Welcome back to our Working on Wellness Wednesday---this chiropractor visits with us a couple times each month—and we are happy to have—Dr. Joshua Jorde –joining us---     Quite the interesting reminders and hopes for our listeners from you today-------   We’re on our way into spring even if it seems to be a leap forward and then a few steps back with the wild temperature changes. Still, I’m hearing a lot more patients bring up spring cleaning both in and outside the home.    Cleaning out pantries, emptying closets, clearing out yard brush, etc. are all things that can be a bit of a strain in general, but especially after a winter of sitting comfy and cozy without being as physically active.  Some things to help avoid the pitfalls of jumping into new projects, especially ones that can be a bit labor intensive anyway, are first and foremost to stretch before working on a project that you know is going to be mostly physical and take a half hour or more.  Going to be mostly physical and take a half hour or more. Even just a simple limbering up by going through ranges of motions for the body parts you’ll be using, legs or arms, as well as the neck and back in general, will significantly reduce the likelihood of minor injuries.     It’s also important to make sure you’re being safe in general depending on what you’re getting up to.    Think of the tasks you’ll be doing especially if repetitive and what could reasonably go wrong. For example, I had a patient just the other day cleaning out all the cupboards in the kitchen and she’s a little on the shorter side herself, so she was constantly up and down a step ladder. In that case, make sure that you do move it each time you go up or down as needed rather than trying to reach over to the side and risk straining yourself, or worse, falling. Or if going up and down stairs repeatedly such as to store things in the basement, make sure that you don’t carry too much that falling down stairs with that extra weight on top of you could be a real problem. Also make sure you aren’t wearing socks that could maybe slip since you know you’ll be going up and down more than usual.     Or if taking things out of storage that you haven’t even seen in years, get a good idea of how heavy bin or tote you’re dealing with before trying to pull it out so as to avoid over or underestimating it and straining yourself. I know I’ve pulled on totes that I forgot were only full of stuffed animals and nearly fell backward and I’ve also pulled on totes that ended up being full of books and strained myself by trying to tug quickly instead of a slower, yet more forceful pull with my back protected.     When it comes to outdoor work, many of the same rules apply, especially being aware of what you’re doing and where you’re going. Be aware of wet leaves, mud patches, loose roots or branches, etc. especially if up or down any hills.     When dealing with tree limbs, again it’s better to get down and reposition a ladder than to try and ‘make it work’ by leaning and reaching. Likewise, proper gear is also important. If on ones knees clearing out a garden bad, knee pads while be very important. Work gloves will be equally so if dealing with wood or dry brambles. If you aren’t worried about getting a good grip to avoid slivers or thorns, you can focus more on keeping your back, knees, and shoulders stable when working and lifting, after all.      Finally, one thing that’s important with either task is to take breaks. For very heavy duty activities, try and take a one minute breather every 15 minutes or so. But on the plus side, we’re at least mostly out of the period of long lasting ice on the ground and having to be careful about slips and falls. Since it’s not really the right time of year to talk about any specific seasonal injuries, I thought I’d go into detail a little bit today on something that makes us unique at Jorde Chiropractic Clinic. Often on here I try and give general advice as well as encourage people to go to chiropractors in general since I know with broadcasts, the signal can certainly get far enough away that it reaches some people who may be a little too far away to come see us. However, at least on occasion it might be good for listeners to hear how we do things at our own clinic. While I talked about the ARPwave therapy not terribly long ago, it’s been a while since I last talked about what really sets us apart; manual muscle testing. Every muscle in the body is controlled by specific nerves. Likewise, each of those nerves are formed by multiple nerve roots as they exit the spine. Some nerves or even individual muscles controlled by these nerves are very much controlled by one nerve root substantially more than the others. Because of this fact, physicians have long been able to identify if there is an issue with a particular nerve root by testing individual muscles in ways that isolate the individual muscle in question which itself also is controlled primarily by a single nerve. Note that I say physicians and not just chiropractors because manual muscle testing hearkens back all the way to the days of Hippocrates. He’s the ancient Greek physician for whom we get the term Hippocratic Oath, by the way. Today, not as many physicians make use of muscle testing due to the main drawback being that it’s a bit tough and takes a lot of practice to get a good feel for muscle testing in the first place and these days there are quite a few tests that are just a bit easier especially in regards to what most doctors needed muscle testing for back in the day; determining if the issue was stemming from a single nerve root or if it was from a named nerve. Nowadays, the medical doctors who most use manual muscle testing regularly are neurologists and orthopedic surgeons. In chiropractic specifically, however, there are multiple benefits to manual muscle testing. Not only does it tell if there is spinal nerve impingement, but by moving the body at the affected spinal levels, We’re able to determine what direction the impingement is coming from and, by extension, the most appropriate way to correct it. We can likewise tell if it’s perhaps not a chiropractic situation at all if unable to find motion or direction that improves the strength and are therefore able to refer accordingly. What patients most seem to like though, is the fact that it clearly demonstrates there is a problem and also that it got corrected once the strength returns in the post check. It’s no longer some esoteric thing where the doctor says, “Ah, I see” and then “got it” after the adjustment while the patient just has to trust the doctor knows what they’re looking at and doing. Which is generally a safe bet anyway, of course, but it’s still nice for the patients to know and not feel left out of the loop. So while I encourage anyone with aches or pains of the spine, shoulders, knees, headaches, et. I have. the resilience that some of these athletes are showing, even while the war is tearing their country and families apart. That's what the Olympics have always been about. but i wish it was also about peace. Did you know russia is not allowed to compete as a country? because of their war on ukraine. That's a win in my eyes. Some russian athletes are still competing as independent athletes, but you will not see russian flag raised or their anthem sung.   Ukraine's energy grid is attacked daily. You can see for yourself if you look up the current situation in Kiev for example, but it's all cities and villages around the country. Ukraine has opened something called "resilience points", where you can come in, charge your phone, warm up, have some hot tea or coffee, maybe even a warm meal. Otherwise the electricity is divided up and provided several hours each day, sometimes the only time you have power is a few hours during the night, when you wake up and try to warm up your home, cook some meals, shower, etc.   while here, in SD - many ukrainians are blessed to be safe. They all value and appreciate that. What they are faced with at the same time is administrative delays, forcing them to quit jobs and even consider leaving the country. Many bind together, look for support and wait the delays out. While we are working to expedite these work authorizations one at a time, I wish there was a bigger fix. These people are here legally, they have already proven themselves in communities and at work, but every year they have to reapply for work authorization, pay fees. There are 21 CSPs in the state, geographically intentional to help people and families stay close to home.   CSPs are funded through a mix of Medicaid funding, grants, and private donations.   When people with disabilities live and participate in the community, the whole community becomes stronger. Community Support Providers help people with disabilities live full, independent lives, right here in our community. They want what we all want – a home, relationships, purpose, routine When people are supported locally instead of institutional settings, everyone wins – the individuals themselves, their families, and taxpayers.   Community Support Providers don’t just support individuals – we keep families stable and working. Without community-based services like ours, many families would have no option but to leave the workplace to provide full-time care, leading to lost wages and an increased reliance on public assistance. Providers allow caregivers to work, pay taxes, and contribute to the economy Community Support Providers prevent costly crisis care – it’s far more cost-effective to support someone every day than to respond after a crisis. Regular support from trained staff and professionals prevents ER room visits, hospital stays and crisis placements, all of which are extremely expensive. Consistent daily support helps people stay stable and healthy. Preventive care always costs less than emergency intervention   Safe, accessible housing is preventative care. Reduces homelessness, hospitalizations, and institutional placements When people have safe homes with the right supports, they’re less likely to need costly interventions later.   Community Support Providers are good employers. The Andrus Award for Community Service is a prestigious honor presented annually by each AARP state office to an outstanding volunteer. It is named for AARP’s Founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who knew that a life fulfilled was a life dedicated to service. The award celebrates individuals who generously share their experiences, talents and skills to enrich the lives of others and to improve their community. Abbott was honored for her 38-year career in nursing and education, where she not only advocated for the nursing profession but also for research that preserves the health of Native Americans and increases Native American participation in STEM fields. For nearly a decade, she has stepped up to lead local activities, lend her voice to advocacy efforts, and serve on our volunteer Executive Council. As an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe from Eagle Butte, Karla has helped AARP South Dakota reach out to rural and Native American communities on important topics like Social Security, Medicaid Expansion and Family Caregiving – an area she knows well, having been a caregiver for her father.”   Doris Ann Werlinger of Rapid City received the 2025 Community Leadership Award, recognizing her efforts to engage others in the mission and priorities of AARP South Dakota. Over the past 25 years, Werlinger has held nearly every volunteer role in the state, including coordinating AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and AARP Driver Safety programs, taking action as an advocacy volunteer, helping at events and, currently, coordinating AARP South Dakota’s Information Center located at the Uptown Rapid mall.   The 2025 AARP Amplifier Award went to Melodee and Dave Johnson of Sioux Falls. The Johnsons are a well-known duo at Sioux Falls events and have shared their time and talents with AARP South Dakota for more than a decade. When volunteering at events, they warmly draw people in to learn more about AARP’s resources and programs. As “amplifiers,” the Johnsons help communicate the message, mission and priorities of AARP South Dakota to engage a broader audience.   The summit’s theme of Red, White and YOU! put the spotlight on our nation’s 250th birthday celebration in 2026, as well as on the importance of volunteers to communities across the state. Past community challenge grants across the state have supported safe walking and biking trails, park improvement projects, community gardens and more.      We appreciate all that AARP does for health care and education---      Joshua Jorde---next –among the topics ---Sleeping positions---following Fox Business News---   9:29/00—KELO Commercials 9:30/30---fox biz news 9:32/30---Wellness Wednesday 3      One of the LONG-TIME Regulars in our Wellness Wednesday show is Dr. Joshua Jorde------he’s back in his mid-week position---and he wants to talk sleeping positions---     Good morning Dr. Jorde   Last time I was on, I mentioned I may talk today about sleeping positions, bed considerations, pillows, etc. and it turns out it was incredibly relevant for me personally as well given how my own sleeping situation was last week.   To start with, and favorite quote of mine about health, which I often need to tell myself, too, is “a person who doesn’t make time for recreation will sooner or later be forced to make time for illness.” Unfortunately, the illness in this case struck my daughter rather than me, though I did indeed need to take time off to look after her including spending 4 nights on a pull-out hospital guest bed.   Now, before I even get on to advice on things that can be changed, I should at least talk about dealing with things that can’t. More often than not when travelling, you can’t readily choose your bed. And given how much time we spend in our own beds, a new bed is almost always going to be worse for your body if in it for a few days even if the bed is objectively better just due to being unused to it. That’s part of why getting adjusted after travelling, especially a week or more, is a good idea.    However, even though you can’t bring your bed along, it’s much more manageable to at least bring your own pillow(s) along especially if driving. When dealing with your own bed though, the first question is “what’s the best way to sleep?” Again, all of this will be generalities as people with significant acute injuries, sometimes with chronic injuries, end stages of pregnancy etc. will all have different guidelines depending on their circumstances.   For most people, though, sleeping on the back is going to be best, on one’s side is second best and can be improved by keeping an eye on some factors, and sleeping on one’s stomach is worst especially because just to be able to breath will mean significantly twisting one portion of the spine or the other.   Obviously, this can be difficult to change since even if able to fall asleep on one’s back, sometimes people turn at night and you can’t do much while asleep to prevent that. One thing that can help in some is a weighted blanket.    The little bit of extra resistance can be enough to let the body know to stop when trying to turn. For side sleepers, turning back and forth can also be an issue, as can having the body twist one way or the other. A pillow between the knees can help, though even better is a body pillow so you can wrap your arm around it to again keep give a little bit of resistance to your sleeping self to prevent rolling. Stomach sleepers are rarer in the first place and can often turn into side sleepers fairly easily with a body pillow.   As for what kind of firmness your bed should be depending on what sort of sleeper you are, back sleepers will generally do well with a firm mattress and side sleepers should be ‘slightly’ firm. Avoid soft.   The side sleeper should have at least a bit of give just to accommodate for the different areas of the body having different weights and so should sink in at least a bit more at those areas to maintain support, but too soft will just bend one just as much the other way as if sleeping on concrete.    With pillows, the best sort for a back sleeper is a cervical pillow. Basically, it’ll have a bit of a curve to support the neck, a grove for the head, and a smaller curve on the other end to support the rounding of the skull. Getting even more generic, a single flat, slightly firm pillow is best.    For a side sleeper, however, I’ve seen plenty of different fancy pillow options and heard good things about some and bad about others, so for now I’ll just go off general advice for regular pillows. Two is going to be ideal; a flat and firm one as the base of support with a medium, softer pillow on top.    The reason for two is to help bridge the gap between the shoulders and the head when on one’s side while the softer pillow on top will be able to conform to the curve of the head.    So if you’ve been dealing with a bad bed or pillow for a while, be sure to fix that problem, but also get your spine sorted out as well and back in alignment. At Blackburn Basement REPAIR.COM   (((MUSIC---THIS OLE HOUSE))))    I’m Bill Zortman and for the FIRST TIME in FEBRUARY 2026—WELCOME to our REPORT CARD SHOW---with the first numbers for Home Buying, Selling, and Building for 2026---      On the first and second Monday’s of EACH MONTH---with the help of the Building Permits---Real Estate Leaders---Home Builders---and Bankers we take our first monthly look at where we are for the year.      Tony Bachman has been working with me—since back in the days I worked as a Real Estate Agent for him. Now the closest I come to the Real Estate Profession is this show---and others that look and talk about where we are and where we are going.   It’s an exciting time to be looking at the real estate market! The overarching theme for 2026 is a “steadier and stronger”housing market that offers more breathing room for both buyers and sellers. Here are the key talking points: Expert Forecast for 2026: A Steadier Market Experts describe 2026 as a “reset year” where the market becomes more balanced. While we aren't "off to the races" with explosive growth, the outlook is very positive for those looking for stability. Mortgage Rates: Rates are expected to remain in the low sixes, likely bouncing between 6% and 6.25% throughout the year. Price Growth: Nationally, home prices are projected to rise modestly, with an average growth of about 1.6%. Inventory & Sales: There is a projected 10% increase in inventory, giving buyers more options than they’ve had in years. Consequently, total home sales are expected to rise from 4.7 million to about 5.1 million. Improving Affordability for Buyers Affordability is set to improve modestly this year, marking a welcome shift for many families. This is driven by three main factors: Wages Outpacing Prices: In a significant win for buyers, wage growth is expected to outpace home price growth in 2026. Purchasing Power: Rising incomes combined with steadier mortgage rates are giving buyers more purchasing power. The 30% Threshold: For the first time since 2022, the typical monthly mortgage payment is expected to slip below 30% of the median income, falling to roughly 29.3%. Breakdown of 2026 Sales Volume Existing Home Sales: This segment is forecasted to grow by about 10%, reaching approximately 4.5 million sales. To put that growth in perspective, there were roughly 4 million existing home sales in 2024 and 4.1 million in 2025. New Home Sales: Sales of new constructions are expected to tick up moderately to over 700,000 units. This is an increase from the approximately 680,000 new home sales seen annually over the last couple of years. Why Volume is Increasing This growth in sales volume is driven by several factors that are making the market more accessible for many families: Improved Affordability: Mortgage rates are expected to be more accommodating, helping more Americans buy their next home. Increased Inventory: More owners are expected to move as "life events" nudge them to sell, and the "lock-in" effect of previous low mortgage rates begins to loosen. Pent-up Demand: More buyers who were previously on the sidelines are expected to jump into the market as rates and affordability improve. The loosening lock-in effect drives sales volume by increasing the number of homes available for purchase as long-time homeowners finally decide to move. How the "Lock-In" Effect Loosens The "lock-in" effect occurs when homeowners stay in their current houses because they have sub-4% mortgage rates they don't want to give up. This is expected to change in 2026 due to several key factors: Life Events as a Catalyst: Regardless of interest rates, "life events" like marriage, new children, or job changes will continue to nudge owners to move. Accommodating Rates: A more accommodating monetary policy from the Federal Reserve is expected to help more Americans feel they can afford their next home. Narrowing Rate Gaps: As average mortgage rates are forecasted to hover in the low sixes, the financial "penalty" for moving is becoming less of a barrier for many families. Truly, though, it did remind me that there are multiple factors that can go into someone being subluxated, ‘out’, misaligned, etc. including stress. Recently here I discussed some of the foundational philosophy of chiropractic and one of the major concepts is the Three T’s which are the causes of subluxation; Thoughts, Traumas, and Toxins.     ‘Thoughts’ primarily refers to stress which, among several other mostly negative effects on the body leads to ligament laxity. Basically, the ligaments connect bones to other bones and are there to keep the structure secure and stable. So if they get overly loose, subluxations are much more likely to occur because they can’t do their job of keeping everything in line nearly as well. This is especially relevant to us South Dakotans at this time of year, especially with the cold of last week.     Not only are the holidays often stressful as is January for some people just due to being the beginning of a year, semester, and quarter, but we also miss out on two major things to help regulate stress. Again going back to another thing I regularly discuss, usually in fall, is how important vitamin D is for many things. In this case, it’s relevant due to its function as a mood regulator which can help fight seasonal depression and the associated stressors with it.       Also, people aren’t as likely to get out and do any exercise when it’s as cold as it has been and exercise is the primary instigator for the body to break down cortisol, the stress hormone.       Another one of the Three T’s that can work in the same manner is toxins. We’re exposed to various environmental toxins all day long and while it would be impossible to avoid all of them, we can work to avoid the obvious ones.        One very obvious one is smoking or vaping. Long-term tobacco use has been well studied in general and one result that has been found to have an extremely high correlation is tobacco use and chronic low back pain. This is due to the buildup of toxins over the years which also lead to ligament laxity.       It’s funny in a strange sort of way that you can tell a smoker that it’ll lead to an early grave and some will say they don’t want to get old anyway, but tell them they’ll have to deal with lifelong, intractable low back pain and they’ll quit cold turkey right then and there.       Finally, the most obvious of the Three T’s is trauma. However, the more overlooked aspect of it is repetitive microtrauma. Doing to same thing over and over can be rough enough on the body already, but especially with bad posture and form.         However, even more neglected is how important a good bed and good shoes are to good physical, especially lower back, health. It’s expected that we’ll be standing and walking for much of the day as well as that we’ll be lying in bed for roughly a third of the day to sleep. An overly soft bed where you sink into it and nothing is supported is just asking for trouble, as are shoes which give no support or cushion at all and are little better than walking barefoot when on concrete. Perhaps next week I’ll go into more detail on beds and sleeping positions in particular.        So, I know I’ll be getting adjusted by one of the other doctors later today myself, but we’ll all still have some availability today or any of our other usual days to get you straightened out whether you’re suffering from the pitfalls of myriad, seemingly small health issues all culminating together to cause a subluxation or a sudden traumatic injury like picking up your two-year-old grandson a little too quickly because he likes to be jumped into the air.     Our office hours are MWF 9-5:30, TTh 9-12:30, and Saturday 9-noon. The campaign will educate South Dakota students and parents about the dangers of counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl and provide families with practical tools to help prevent overdose deaths. The project will reach an estimated 50,000 or more students, parents, and educators across the state. South Dakota was one of only two states to see an increase in overdose deaths in 2024, with fentanyl responsible for the majority of those deaths. Many young people encounter drugs without realizing how lethal fentanyl is, especially when it is hidden in counterfeit pills that look like prescription medications. “Too many families still don’t realize how common and deadly fake pills are,” said Angela Kennecke, founder and CEO of Emily’s Hope. “This grant allows us to reach families before tragedy strikes, with clear, honest information that can truly save lives.” The Facing Fentanyl campaign will include: Production of six new public service announcements and short-form videos for youth and parents Creation and statewide distribution of Fentanyl Awareness Toolkits in print and digital formats Targeted social media and digital education campaigns Presentations at schools and community events across South Dakota Expansion of Emily’s Hope’s online educational hub to be more mobile-friendly and regularly updated Evaluation tools to measure impact and improve messaging The campaign will focus on both urban and rural communities, addressing gaps in prevention resources and education where overdose risk is growing. “This is about empowering parents to have hard but life-saving conversations and giving young people the truth before they ever encounter risk,” Kennecke said. “Education is prevention, and prevention saves lives.” Emily’s Hope was founded in 2019 in memory of Kennecke’s daughter, Emily, who died after unknowingly taking fentanyl. The organization works to remove stigma around substance use disorder through education, awareness, and prevention, while also helping people access treatment and recovery support. The South Dakota Community Foundation’s Beyond Idea Grant program supports innovative projects that address pressing community challenges. The Facing Fentanyl campaign will also share lessons learned and effective strategies with other prevention organizations to multiply its impact. About Emily’s Hope Emily’s Hope is a nonprofit organization working to eliminate the stigma surrounding substance use disorder and to save lives through evidence-informed education, compassionate support, and financial assistance for recovery. Health officials say flu activity in South Dakota and the region remains manageable but worth monitoring. Flu season arrives every year, but public health officials are watching this one a little more closely because of a newly dominant strain of influenza A(H3N2) that emerged after this season’s vaccine formula was finalized. The strain, known as H3N2 subclade K, accumulated enough genetic changes to draw notice from epidemiologists tracking global flu patterns. A December 19 report in JAMA Medical News described its spread in several countries, including early and heavier-than-usual flu activity in parts of Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada. In the United States, health officials say flu timing remains typical for midwinter. What has changed is which strain is circulating. Northern Plains News first reported in December on the emergence of the H3N2 subclade as the flu season began to take shape. Since then, the strain has become dominant nationwide as vaccination rates have slipped.       What the data show in South Dakota and the region In South Dakota, state health officials continue to track influenza through weekly surveillance updates. So far this season, the state has reported six flu-related deaths, more than 5,200 cases and more than 330 hospitalizations, according to the South Dakota Department of Health. Officials note those figures reflect cumulative, midseason reporting, not a sudden surge. Recent weekly updates continue to describe overall flu activity as low, suggesting the season may be moving past its peak rather than accelerating. Regionally, influenza activity remains elevated but stable across the Northern Plains. Federal surveillance data show HHS Region 8 — which includes South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah — has reported higher laboratory test positivity than other regions in recent weeks. Public health experts caution that percent positivity often peaks during midwinter and does not, by itself, indicate increasing severity.        Health officials emphasize that “low” activity does not mean zero impact. South Dakota’s older population, long travel distances to hospitals and limited rural health capacity mean even moderate flu seasons can strain care systems, particularly for older adults and young children.         The emphasis, officials say, is preparedness rather than alarm.          What makes H3N2 different H3N2 viruses are a regular part of seasonal flu, but they are often associated with somewhat more severe seasons, especially for older adults and young children.         Federal surveillance data show that roughly nine out of 10 H3N2 viruses now being characterized in the United States belong to subclade K. Researchers have identified multiple mutations in a surface protein targeted by vaccines, raising the possibility of a less precise match this season.
