The South Dakota FFA Foundation is proud to announce the recipients of five $100 scholarships for students placing first in each of the five SD Regional Range Evaluation Competitions this fall. This year’s scholarship recipients are: Tessa Hinman, Sunshine Bible Academy; Molly Harty, Philip; Kohen Mebius, Wessington Springs; Lily Larson, West Central; and Lidia Dupraz, Deubrook.

The scholarships are designed to encourage and reward students’ accomplishments in the field of range management.  Scholarships are made possible by a contribution to the SD FFA Foundation from LeRoy and Cathie Draine of Rapid City.  “These scholarships represent a good combination of three important beliefs: first, our respect for the integrity of the land, our soils and water; second, the imperative to provide educational opportunities for understanding and the wise use and care of the land; and third, faith in the process of developing knowledgeable custodians for the future,” said Cathie Draine.

The Range Evaluation Competition, hosted by the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, SDSU Extension and the US Forest Service, provides students insight into the basic tools used in land stewardship, which is the application of ecological principles and historically significant disturbance such as grazing.  Contest objectives are to teach participants some of the principles of ecology including soil/plant relationships, plant/animal relationships, and plant succession as applied to management of the land resource.  Beef cattle and grouse have been chosen to demonstrate the concept of habitat evaluation.  Both species are ecologically and economically important and their relationship to different stages of plant succession is well known.

LeRoy and Cathie Draine are proud to support Agricultural Education and the FFA's mission to make a difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.   For more information about the South Dakota FFA Foundation and South Dakota's FFA programs, visit www.sdffafoundation.org.

 Healthcare is a Team Sport
Healthcare takes a team, not just one profession.
Communication, coordination, and respect matter.
Students learn to collaborate from day one at USD.
Rapid City visit (virtually due to fog): This week I had the opportunity to connect with School of Medicine faculty and students in Rapid City and learn about their journey toward residency applications. It was a great reminder that preparing future healthcare professionals takes the support of faculty, mentors, advisors, and peers working together - the TEAM!
I also attended the South Dakota Nursing Summit, a gathering of nursing though leaders from across the state to share ideas about workforce, strengthen relationships; part of a 5-year Dept of Labor grant.

Alumni are Part of the Team
Social Work Alumni gathering during D-Days highlighted the impact of our graduates.
Celebrated alumni achievements and statewide leadership at an awards ceremony in Vermillion on Friday.
Alumni provide mentorship, insight, and workforce connections for current students.
Met many proud USD were on campus this week who continue to serve communities across South Dakota.
Alumni help us understand changing workforce needs and opportunities.

People injure themselves all throughout the year and most of the injuries are done in or around the home. Working out, cleaning house, moving, packing, gardening, etc. But what about those injuries that

happen at work?

A lot of people don’t like to use workman’s compensation unless an injury is extremely severe and I think that at least part of that is due to not knowing how it works. It can be used for any injury that occurs on the job or at the worksite (including slipping in the parking lot) that isn’t the result of one’s own clear failure to adhere to regulations. Those OSHA manuals exist for a reason, after all. However, one very important thing to know in South Dakota, at least, is that who you go to first is both entirely up to the employee and also can get locked in by your employer. An employee who goes to a medical doctor or other doctor recommended by their employer is going to have to stay with that physician unless they get written approval by their employer to change providers or are referred to a specialist.

While the employee is required to inform their employer of which physician they want to go to either before or as soon as possible after initial treatment, they are not required to go to any physician recommended by their employer.

Because of this, some individuals may want to seek chiropractic care for their injury whether from a chiropractor they are already familiar with or for the first time, but going to a medical doctor first could keep the employee locked in. However, employees are allowed to seek a second opinion without the employer’s approval, though at their own expense.

It's also important to note, because some people are unwilling to avail themselves of worker’s compensation, that if you decide significantly after the fact, especially because a condition has worsened, to make use of it, you could run into denials, at least in part. An employer is, understandably, not responsible for a condition worsening, even if it was very obviously from a work injury, if the employee doesn’t take timely steps to correct it or at least prevent it from worsening.

Of course, it’s for the best for anybody regardless of where, when, or how an injury came to be, to get it checked and taken care of before it gets worse. However, in an instance where somebody else is responsible such as a work injury or other personal injury case like an auto accident, it’s even more imperative to not leave a problem alone until it gets worse or you may end up responsible not just for the exacerbation, but even have an uphill battle proving the initial severity of the injury too long after the fact.

So if you have an injury, don’t leave it alone longer and let it worsen. As always if you need a chiropractor I can recommend three good ones at Jorde Chiropractic Clinic at 2821 S Center Ave. 605 335 0880
