Blog-May 8, 2024—9-10—Working on Wellness Wednesday
When you get to the month of May---and you do a Working on Wellness Wednesday Show---you find a lot of excellent and important examples as May is Mental Health Month—Health Awareness Month---and pick a couple more. That was the setting for our show today.
We started with a new guest—Emily Blegen-Board Certified Neuropsychologist that talked with us frankly about “Dementia”.
As guests do ---and are certainly welcome to---the provide some questions for me---the host to ask. We always work with them---but sometimes if the interviewer can turn it partially into –“I’m Getting Older---and we know the audience doesn’t like the word “Dementia” but respects it----lives with it---and wants to do all we can to not let it affect what it does and how it does it.
Emily shared that yes dementia does go from generation to generation in families—the brain changes begin and the individual can start thinking about it—and the brain suddenly is playing defense---and perhaps making even more dementia like mistakes.
But as she shared—prevention and the role of brain health is dog-gone important---and yes food is a player---and care from caregivers is important—emotionally, physically and yes even financially.
Emily’s My Epiphany Modern Wole Health Program can work with me or you---and essentially makes it easy to boost brain health, and empowers people thru knowledge and support to fight dementia for themselves, their loved ones and perhaps more important future generations.
As Emily explained there are different types of dementia and early symptoms you should be aware of.
Daily support is important as well as Dr. Emily Blegen—Board Certified Neuropsychologist. We hope to have her come back as part of our wellness show and to help those who have dementia –fear dementia---and need someone saying we can control this if we work together.
9:18—we talked with Susan Thesenga---with the American Red Cross-talked with us during Trauma Awareness month. Red Cross is asking donors to race in to give blood this month before calendars start to fill up.
With every second counting—blood products can provide important blood saving care—transfusion needs---including emergencies.
Type O blood donors should know their platelets are especially needed right now. Type ) negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine a patient’s blood type in the most serious situations-Type ) positive is the most used blood type and May signals the beginning of a busy time for celebrations and summer holidays.
In essence the Red Cross is asking donors to race in to give blood this month before calendars fill up
As we heard from Susan---you can give blood every 56 days so donors who give in May will have another lifesaving opportunity later this summer. Blood is needed on the shelves because of an increase in car accidents increase and the person injured may require as many as 00 units of blood. The suggestion is to book a tune to give now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or you can call 1-800-RedCross.
Dr. Allen Unruh joined us at 9:32---he works with many, many neuropathy patients---today Jacob---who had a spinal cord entry lead into his foot—creating numbness in 2015.
He had surgery to correct the compression of T-2 and L and after getting 3 months of physical therapy. Nothing changed---his family told try something new---and he was able to turn to Dr. Unruh.
He doesn’t want to live with this his entire life---and he just wants to be able to walk with his wife and 4 year old son.
So they looked to Dr. Unruh----who shared with the audience—that he is continuing to improve and no matter what it takes—he is finding that he may not need living on drugs or having multiple surgeries.
A positive approach---and we with Dr. Unruh’s nodding too---have tentatively scheduled Jacob back to update us later this summer.

We closed the working on wellness Wednesday 9-10 with Wendy Dooley---the Help Line—and what they are doing with the serious stress issued facing so many people. For some they turned to despair--- and what to give up----our hope is that we -during Mental Health Month can provide information---talk about those that are the care-takers---and regardless of age ---there is help---and there is someone to listen.
With school days about to end we talk about the changes ahead for students who will be out of school---and sometimes that change can create stress and turmoil with families---the Help Line can listen—and make a difference.
