----last week we got into those breaking the law----what about this week---what should we be paying attention too?

When we talked by phone on Thursday---you mentioning spear-fishing----and added some things to it-----

Spear phishing is a highly targeted and personalized form of social engineering where attackers research a specific individual or organization to craft a convincing, fraudulent message. Unlike traditional phishing, which casts a wide net with generic emails, spear phishing uses relevant details—like your name, job title, or specific project info—to gain your trust and trick you into revealing sensitive data, making unauthorized payments, or installing malware.

How Spear Phishing Works

  • Targeted Research: Attackers gather information from public sources like LinkedIn, company websites, and social media to understand your role, colleagues, and interests.
  • Impersonation: They pose as someone you trust, such as your CEO, a vendor you frequently work with, or your HR department.
  • Urgency & Pressure: Messages often create a sense of crisis, such as an "urgent payroll update" or a "fraudulent activity alert" on your account, to bypass your critical thinking.
  • High Success Rate: Because they are so personalized, these scams account for less than 0.1% of all emails but cause 66% of successful data breaches.

Each Friday—we visit with Downtown Sioux Falls Brandon Hanson

Lets talk some of your events---

You can really feel Downtown shifting into summer mode right now, and honestly, this may be the year people rethink leaving town for the Fourth of July altogether.

We’ve got a huge summer ahead, and Downtown is going to be right at the center of it.

First, I want to look ahead to Open Streets, because the June installment is shaping up to be one of the most creative ones yet. Open Streets is where we temporarily close down portions of Phillips Avenue and turn them into spaces built entirely for people instead of cars.

That means live music, food trucks, family activities, outdoor seating, local vendors, art, and a chance to experience Downtown at a slower pace.

In June, architects, engineers and creatives from across Sioux Falls are actually designing and building a giant mini golf course directly on Main Avenue. It’s playful, interactive, and exactly the kind of thing that makes Downtown feel alive and different. We'll be right outside the Washington Pavilion. It costs only $6 to play and you get to keep the ball as a souvenir. I also happens to be Free First Friday at the Washington Pavilion.

And then looking even further ahead to the Fourth of July, Downtown is going to be the epicenter of activity this year.

The Fourth of July Parade is officially coming back, and there’s already a lot of excitement building around it. Between the parade, Jacobson Plaza, walkable streets, restaurants, patios, and all the energy building downtown right now, this feels like the kind of year where people are going to choose to stay in Sioux Falls and celebrate right here in the urban core.

That’s exciting for businesses, exciting for families, and exciting for the overall momentum of Downtown.

Now into this weekend.

One huge milestone worth celebrating is Zandbroz Variety’s 37th Anniversary Sale happening May 14th through the 17th. Thirty-seven years downtown is a big deal. They’re celebrating with a storewide sale, extended hours, and it’s a great excuse to stop in and support one of the businesses that helped shape the character of Downtown Sioux Falls.

Friday and Saturday also bring EmBe’s Refresh Your Closet Sale, where you can shop discounted clothing, shoes, and accessories while supporting women’s leadership and workforce development programs in the community.

Friday night, Death of a Salesman opens with The Premiere Playhouse. It’s one of the most iconic American plays ever written, and Downtown continues to show how strong our local theater scene has become.

Saturday during the day, Third Avenue Lofts is hosting an open house, giving people a chance to explore downtown living options firsthand. More and more people are choosing to live downtown because of the walkability, the energy, and the ability to be connected to everything happening around them.

Also Saturday, Plum’s Cooking Company is hosting a hands-on donut class, which honestly sounds dangerous in the best possible way.

And then the weekend wraps with additional performances of Death of a Salesman on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
