Blog---July 3, 2024—9-10—Working on Wellness Wednesday
This was one of those It’s YOUR Business Shows---that got mashed around but came out with storylines that may be among the best we have had in this Medical Show’s history.
We had a late request from the South Dakota Health Secretary’s Office to include them in the show---they wanted 9:06---but we had two other guests that needed to be in their show slots so they could get to work with a short day before July 4th. That started the music.
We were scheduled to have our friend Dr. Joshua Jorde---1st but---with all the late adds for taping interviews this morning---the copy didn’t get to the very likeable Chiropractor.
So we started the traveling medical music---putting in a segment we had just recorded with AARP’s Mary Michaels---it included concerns with young children around fireworks---in essence make sure others are clear of the area if you lighting fireworks—have water on had to extinguish and sparks and clean up and garbage left over. Use sunscreen and reapply if you are out in the gun—wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and stay hydrated.
Lisa Ottmar---with the Help-line shared some very important differences with 988 for suicide and crisis lifeline with 211.
988 is share’s important needs and the belief there is hope—
Crisis situations include distress, suicide or other health resources---substance use info and support programs—and connections to all levels of treatment options.
Care coordination and follow-up support
    2-1-1—Get Connected---GET HELP
      Housing/Rental Assistance
      Utility Assistance
      Food Resources
Government, disaster, basic health, volunteer opportunities, and childcare information.

Lisa shared that both are answered by Helpline Center and available to all South Dakotans.
-------9:18---Dr. Joshua Jorde joined us we talked a little bit about swimming and how it can help quite a bit with cases as low back pain as well as how really any level of activity in the water can be beneficial to the local back whether swimming, aquarobics, or even just walking around in the water whether against, with or without a current.
As Dr. Jorde shared---the main reasons why it’s effective for the low back is because the motions mostly work the paraspinal muscles, and it does so with resistance because of the water, and more importantly the water transactions out the spine slightly because of the density compared to air and so helps with the motion of the spine while in the water.
Part of our discussion was to pay attention to what is happening with the current---even in a flooded house. But if you get in trouble you can talk with the Jorde Chiropractic Clinic at 821 S Center Avenue.
Next up---South Dakota Director of Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt. We talked about the mosquito population and that nearly 200 cities counties and tribes across South Dakota will collectively receive $500,000 in grants to combat mosquitoes and prevent the spread of West Nile Virus in 2024. These grants have been allocated to support local efforts in controlling mosquito populations and reducing the risk of West Nile Virus in the 2024. The Secretary emphasized the importance of community efforts in mosquito control and the prevention of the disease. With the recent flooding this is a serious issue and we as broadcasters were happy to see that there would be help across our great State.
Kips Rounds---SD GAME Fish and Parks---announced the reopening of Wall Lake in Minnehaha County—which had been included in the Governor’s “no boating declaration. The lake will have a no-wake zone—to provide the opportunity to enjoy the water, but also balance ensuring safety for users and protecting personal property. No boating remains in effect on McCook Lake in Union County. GFP Secretary Kevin Robling has been appointed as the Governor’s designee to add to, delete or modify boating restrictions for any bodies of water similarly affected here.
