Blog---January 31, 2025—9-10—It’s YOUR Business

What a show to close the week in January. Same show---Governor Larry Rhoden and even Congressman Dusty Johnson. And Jodi Schwan and Ron Nelson shared the life and legacy of Craig Lloyd who left us Thursday.

The Governor of course was approved a few days ago-replacing Kristi Noem. While Kristi is working the Border duties---the West River Ag -Business Giant is rolling the 2025 Legislative Session down the road.

This week—he made Sioux Falls proud naming and getting Tony Venhuizen approved as Lt. Governor. Tony with Casey Crabtree have been getting us ready for the legislative session---Will Mortenson—has picked up the pace with Venhuizen now learning, listening, and launching policies.

This was another 4 day week in Pierre---next week it will be a 5 day week and we heard from the Governor, the Lt Governor, Mr. Crabtree and Mr. Mortenson what we would be seeing thru the rest of the legislative session.

I did ask a favor of Governor Rhoden---please help me with the criticism I get and the State gets (in a nice way) from the Ag Secretaries in Iowa (Naig) and in Minnesota (Peterson). For the longest time we have not been able to interview the Ag Secretary in South Dakota. The Governor said—that will change and we can expect to start doing that when we want.

Looking forward to working with the Governor, the Ag Secretary and more in the weeks ahead—during and after the legislative session comes to a close.

Jodi Schwan---Sioux Falls Business last week talked about Sioux Falls looking at new leadership to replace Mayor Paul Ten Haken when he finishes his term. Today Jodi talked about the passing of a legend—Craig Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd and family have meant a lot to Sioux Falls and surrounding area.

Ron Nelson joined the discussion with his Commercial Real Estate Business talking about how it met Craig back in the 80’s. Nelson was 26—and he started working with Craig. Old Nellie thought it was kind of a big deal to work with Lloyd—even then he had the reputation as a “go Getter”.

Ron shared that he was with the Dunham Company just getting starting—and Dunham comp any with Don Dunham and Lloyd were competitors—but liked each other a lot—kind of “two peas in a pod” from the standpoint that they were wired in the same way.

In the last 20 years Craig has built a “formidable team”. Craig always portrayed himself as a small town contractor, had a dis-arming ‘aw-shucks type of self-deprecating demeanor—for Craig the wheels were always turning—but as Ron put it “played dumb, dumb like a fox. The wheels were always turning.

Jessica Schmidt—the BBB of South Dakota shared tips to avoid tax scams. She shared the best way to avoid tax identity theft is to file your taxes as early as possible. File before a scammer can use your information to file a fake return.

A key could be jotting down your identity PROTECTION PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS before you file your return. This is a 6-digit number confirming your identity and your Social Security Number. The IRS will provide your IP PIN online and then send you a new IP PIN each December by postal mail.

If you are the victim of tax identity theft in the U.S., contact the IRS at 1-800-908-4490.

Kip Rounds—GFP Hunting 101 Program—is offered thru the Outdoor Campuses that walks students through all aspects of hunting and takes them out on a hunt to learn first-hand. The Hunting 101 Program is focused on getting more people introduced the outdoors and continuing the South Dakota Hunting Heritage.

Congressman Dusty Johnson is in the state this weekend—he was in this neck of the woods today and headed west a little later on.

We talked about what he has been doing in DC and they have been interviewing want-to-be-s for Cabinet Level Positions.

He did share what his constituents have wanted to know and we talked about the terrible plane-helicopter crash in DC –that has claimed 67 lives. Dusty shared he flies into that DC airport a hundred times a year.

Cabinet positions ---and the first week in February---all things we shared as well.

Will Mortenson joins us from the legislative session in Pierre---his take on the session---and how he is working with the new Governor and just approved Lt Governor. Tony Vanhuizen along with Casey Crabtree have been helping us chase information in DC---Mortenson with Tony becoming VP—is going to help our information pool beginning today.

Brandon Hansen—Downtown Sioux Falls shared that the Final Days of the Burger Battle are in play---the friendly competition among local chefs has fueled the downtown’s vibrancy—bringing thousands of visitors thru restaurant doors. The burger battle brings $3.4 million dollars of economic impact infusing into Downtown in the 31 days.

Dianna Paterson—Career Opportunities share opportunities today---she does that each week for Sanford.
