With all the shows we have done on this friendly radio station for years---a Working on Wellness Wednesday show –gives us a chance to share those being educated in wellness, to those that are trying to stay healthy-----

We are fortunate enough to have the Head of the SDSU MED School—Tim Ridgway talking with us---along with some of those med students that will be helping us for decades to come.

   (((TAPED Segment at 8:30AM))

TODAY---Zoe Donelan-----brings unique talents to the medicine field-so says our Med School Chief Dr. Tim Ridgway---

  • She is a very talented artist and utilizes this talent to help herself and others in medical school. The arts have been shown to be very important in building resilience in medical students, residents, and physicians. In addition, it helps them to really bring compassion to their parents.
  • She has a passion for animals and has done RESEARCH in this area.
  • She will speak about her path to where she is now
  • I think all the above fits nicely with wellness and all it’s components.

     --------its all about staying healthy-------

---------we always appreciate when Dr. Tim Ridgway –shares one of his students---and we learn one of those that will be helping us for decades to come.

Here are talking points centered around the role of Community Support Providers:

Make this relevant for listeners:

In SD, nearly 117,000 people have a disability.

Breakdown: 5.2% cognitive, 6.1% ambulatory difficulty, 2% self-care difficulty, 4.9% independent living difficulty.

Parents were once told to “institutionalize and forget” their child with disabilities.

DakotAbilities is one of 21 Community Support Providers in South Dakota – by design to allow for geographic convenience, choices based on an individual’s requirement and care.

Not a cookie cutter approach to CSPs, for example, DakotAbilities offers a high-level of skilled nursing care; other CSPs work with people with more prominent behavioral needs.

Our role is to support people to live safe, meaningful, self-directed lives in and with their community.

That includes employment support, volunteering, and social connections – not just care, but opportunity.

What’s at the heart are person-centered choices. Some people need more in-home support while some thrive from community engagement – most benefit from a combination.

The goal is to achieve that person’s optimal independence and self-advocacy.

Without community, people with disabilities and their families are at risk of isolation.

Employment and financial stability are affected if hours are reduced, opportunities have to be turned down in order to stay home – short and long-term impact to financial security.

Without CSPs, caregiver burnout becomes a real risk.

Eventually, the caregiver will be the one who needs care.
