Fertel is the author of Winging It: Improv’s Power and Peril in the Age of Trump, in which he reveals his thoughts and theories about improv as a superpower with a shadowy, perilous side. Winging It was re-released in 2026 as an audiobook. He is currently finishing work on a follow-up book called The Age of Improv, with plans to release later this year. Fertel says, “Trump is skilled at that same improvisational quality that makes Louis Armstrong’s work transcendent, with an instinctual freedom. Yet, in the wrong hands, it becomes something dangerous.”
