This Day In History: Francis Scott Key pens “The Star-Spangled Banner”

View descriptionShare

This day in history in 1814 Francis Scott Key penned “ The Star-Spangled Banner” after Key witnessed the flag still waving over Fort McHenry at daybreak withstanding some 25 hours of British bombardment in the War of 1812. The patriotic song grew in popularity becoming a pregame ritual in our sports and finally becoming our national anthem when congress made it so in 1931. The song still holds a special place in the hearts of Americans and our host Boyd Matheson.
