The 2026 year-end examinations are upon us, and it  is not only Grade 12 learners who are preparing for  this important period. Grade 11 learners and  university students are also gearing up for their final  examinations, with many looking to finish the  academic year on a strong note. As the pressure mounts, effective time management  and proper planning can make all the difference.  How do you create a study timetable that works for  you? How do you balance different subjects,  prioritise challenging topics, and make the most of  the time available without burning yourself out? To help us navigate these questions, we are joined  by Selloane Morake, counsellor and Managing  Founder of Bokamaoso Careers. NSFAS provides financial assistance to eligible students from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them access higher education and pursue their academic goals. Over the past two days, the symposium has created space for sharing research, exchanging ideas and bringing together stakeholders to reflect on the future of teacher education. A teacher’s role has never been limited to standing in front of a classroom and delivering a lesson. Today, teachers are navigating rapidly changing technology, artificial intelligence, diverse classrooms, learner wellbeing, social inequality, discipline, ethics, and changing expectations from schools, families and the law. So, the question becomes: are we preparing teachers for the classrooms they are actually going to enter? That is at the heart of the 2026 Teacher Education Symposium hosted by the Faculty of Education at Nelson Mandela University from 7 to 9 October.  Under the theme, “Reconfiguring Teacher Education for a Technologically Enriched, Socially Just, and Transformative Future,” the symposium brings together academics, policymakers, education leaders, school principals, teachers, researchers and alumni to examine what teacher education needs to look like in a changing world.

The chances are you are familiar with at least one of these well-known health awareness observances; the calendar is full of special months, weeks, and days that raise awareness of a variety of important health issues and conditions. They are dates when people with certain health conditions, their loved ones, advocacy organizations, and support groups rally around a common cause. Educational, fundraising, and support events are often held during these times, and tonight we continue to raise awareness in what is known as Health Awareness Month.

The 15th Annual South African National Schools Moot Court Programme has just concluded, bringing together learners from across the country to debate issues of constitutional rights and the rule of law. This year's moot problem focused on an issue that is increasingly relevant to young people: children's rights and online harms in the digital age, including cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, exposure to inappropriate content and unsupervised adult contact. The programme, a partnership between the South African Human Rights Commission, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, seeks not only to deepen constitutional literacy, but also to inspire young people to see themselves as active participants in South Africa's democracy and potentially as future members of the legal profession. The grand finale took place at the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg on 4 October, placing these young minds in one of the country's most important  legal spaces. And today, we bring that experience closer to home. We are joined by learners from Mthatha High School, Nathi Thetha and Luvumo Bacela, who took part in this year's programme and won. Together with their teacher, Ms. Verna, who supported and guided them through the journey.

The repo rate has gone up twice this year, increasing by a total of 50 basis points and taking the rate to 7.25%. But what does that mean for you and me? For someone with a home loan, vehicle finance, a credit card or a personal loan, higher interest rates can mean more money going towards debt every month. And when households have less money to spend, businesses can feel the pressure too. At the same time, the Reserve Bank says these decisions are about managing inflation and protecting the purchasing power of South Africans  over the longer term. So today, we want to look beyond the numbers. What does a higher repo rate mean for the economy, for businesses, and most importantly, for ordinary  people trying to make ends meet?

Our guest Today is Asisipho Tyawana, the founder  and owner of Asizu Trading Pty Ltd, a constructionfocused business providing mobile small plant,  power tools and equipment hire to emerging  contractors across the Eastern Cape. Asisipho holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from  Stellenbosch University, where she majored in  Investments and Financial Planning, as well as an  LLB from UNISA. Her professional journey has taken  her from asset management to community liaison  work at WBHO, where she developed a strong  interest in creating opportunities for local businesses  within the construction and infrastructure sector. After her own attempts at entering the construction  industry as an emerging contractor did not get off the  ground, Asisipho chose not to walk away from  entrepreneurship. Instead, she invested her remaining savings into small tools and equipment  and built a mobile equipment hire business from the  ground up.

Your first salary comes in, you pay your bills, and for the first time, you have some money left over. Maybe you’ve been watching videos online about investing, you open an investment account, choose an ETF, set up a debit order and tell yourself, “I’ve got this.” And perhaps, at that stage, you do. But life has a way of making our finances more complicated. You get your first proper job. You buy a home. You get married or have a child. You change careers. You become self-employed. Maybe you become responsible for supporting your parents or other family members. Suddenly, it’s no longer just about where to put your  money.

Sinovuyo Mafilika is a young South African poet, mechanical engineering student and community changemaker. A published isiXhosa writer, she has used poetry as a way of expressing herself and connecting with young people, including through her “Poetry is my Therapy” sessions. But her impact goes beyond the page. Sinovuyo is the founder of the Khalimani Reading Club and Tutoring Programme, an initiative supporting local children with reading, writing and essential life skills. Her contribution to her community has also been  recognised, with Sinovuyo being honoured as a youth hero and changemaker in The Herald Nelson Mandela Bay Unsung Heroes Awards.

We will be profiling some of those businesses. Today. We look at Labtronic Solutions.    In a world where creativity is everywhere, but reliable  creative services can sometimes be difficult to find,  one young company in Mdantsane is taking a  different approach.  Labtronic Solutions is a 100% youth-owned  multimedia company that has been operating since  2015, providing services ranging from photography  and videography to graphic design, live streaming,  podcast production, studio hire and 360-video     experiences.  But its vision goes beyond simply producing content.  Founded by Multimedia Systems Strategist Thobane  Vumindaba, LabtronicSolutions is building a  structured multimedia ecosystem designed to bring  greater accountability, transparency and peace of  mind to both clients and creatives.

Today, we turn our attention to a decision that many Grade 9 learners are currently facing: subject choice. Moving from Grade 9 into Grades 10, 11 and 12 is an important transition. The subjects a learner chooses can influence the qualifications they can pursue after matric, the career pathways available to them, and the opportunities they may be able to  access in the future.  But choosing subjects is not simply about choosing the subjects you enjoy or following what your friends are doing. It requires learners to understand their own interests, strengths, abilities and aspirations, while also understanding the requirements of  different careers and further study opportunities.

South Africa's youth unemployment crisis remains  one of the biggest challenges facing the country.  Behind every unemployment statistic is a young  person with an education, qualifications, ambitions  and dreams, but often no opportunity to enter the  economy. Over the years, government interventions such as  the Basic Education Employment Initiative have  provided thousands of young people with an  opportunity to work in schools as education  assistants and general school support staff.  The programme did more than simply provide  temporary employment. It gave young people work  experience, an income, skills and, in many cases, a  renewed sense of purpose. At the same time,  schools benefited from additional support in     classrooms and administrative spaces.  However, with funding for the initiative lapsing, nearly  200,000 employment opportunities are reportedly at  risk. The question is, at a time when youth unemployment  remains critically high; can South Africa afford to lose  programmes that have created pathways into  employment and skills development? 

Our topic today is “Subject Choice”. Today we are going to discuss the Subject Choice. This serves to provide learners with an opportunity to make informed decisions about their future. During this time, learners are encouraged to explore different career paths, understand the importance of choosing the right school subjects, and learn about careers in the public service sector.  These initiatives help learners align their subject choices with their interests, strengths, and future career goals.

Women are increasingly making their mark across STEM, technical, artisan, vocational and occupational careers. Through education, training, practical experience, mentorship and determination, young women are not only entering these spaces, but they are also helping to shape the future of South Africa’s economy. But this conversation is not only about the opportunities that exist. It is about the women who have walked these paths, often entering spaces where women, particularly Black women, have historically been underrepresented. We hear from one such woman, Lorraine Mooi, an award-winning licensed plumber, entrepreneur and Founder of The Plumbing Duchess. Lorraine holds a National Diploma in Financial Information Systems but made the deliberate decision to move into the plumbing trade, choosing a technical field where few women were working. Her journey has taken her from becoming a qualified plumber to being recognised as a two-time Plumbing Industry Lady of the Year and an IDEAL Propeller Entrepreneur Award recipient. She now contributes to the industry through leadership and technical structures, including the Plumbing Industry Registration Board, IOPSA’s NATEXEC and SABS technical committees. She also serves as Vice President of the Southern African Society for Trenchless Technology, becoming the first woman and first Black woman to serve on its board. Her story challenges us to rethink what a STEM career looks like, because STEM is not only about laboratories, computers and engineering degrees. It can also be found in the pipes beneath our cities, the infrastructure that delivers water and sanitation, and the skilled hands that keep our communities functioning.

This Women’s Month, trufm has taken the time to give flowers to phenomenal women, women who  have made a meaningful difference in their communities and continue to inspire generations. Through truShero, we are celebrating women whose contributions have shaped our communities, both before and after democracy. These are women who were nominated by you, our listeners, because you believe their stories deserve to be heard and their contributions deserve to be recognised. The acts also list the behaviours that are illegal before and during an election. A free and fair election is defined as an election in which "coercion is comparatively uncommon". A free and fair election involves political freedoms and fair processes leading up to the vote, a fair count of eligible voters who cast a ballot, a lack of electoral fraud or voter suppression, and acceptance of election results by all parties. An election may partially meet international standards for free and fair elections or may meet some standards but not others.

Today, we’re talking about something that many people experience at work, but not everyone feels  safe enough to talk about. Corporate bullying and the abuse of power in the workplace. For some employees, going to work is not simply about deadlines, meetings and getting the job done.  It can mean walking into an environment where they feel isolated, intimidated, undermined or constantly targeted by someone who has power over them. And  sometimes, that person is a manager or even someone in senior leadership. The difficult part is that workplace bullying doesn’t always look like shouting or obvious confrontation. It can be subtle. It can show up through exclusion, humiliation, passive-aggressive behaviour, unfair  treatment, harassment, or constantly making someone feel like they are not good enough.

The Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of Section 26c of the Skills Development Act of 1998. It is mandated to create and maintain a database of qualified Artisans in the country. The registration serves the following several key purposes: · To enable DHET to have a register of both foreign and national artisans within the country, supporting better industry planning · To assure industry that any artisan employed from the register has authenticated qualifications. · To help DHET determine the need for and grow the capacity of mentors for the mentoring of artisan learners · To assist DHET in determining targets for training programs aimed at addressing the shortage of qualified artisans within the industry. · Establish a framework for the professionalization of artisan development practices in South Africa.

The Code is a set of rules on how the parties and candidates must conduct themselves: Speak out against political violence and threats against other parties, candidates, the Electoral Commission (IEC), members of the public and the media. • Let the authorities know about planned marches or rallies. • Communicate with other political parties and candidates about planned political events.  • Recognise the authority of the IEC. • Work with the IEC structures and allow them to perform their duties. • Work with the police in their investigation of election crime and violence; and • Accept the results of the election or challenge the results in court

On 9 August 1956, more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings to oppose the extension of Pass Laws to women. Their courage became one of South Africa's defining moments, giving birth to the phrase: "Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo." While history remembers the leaders of that march, thousands of women quietly carried the struggle in homes, schools, churches, factories and communities. Many are still alive today. Many have never told their stories. Many may never have the opportunity. As South Africa marks 70 years since that defining moment, trufm believes now is the time to preserve these living stories before history loses them forever.

This is episode 7 and we are focusing on Candidate Nomination.    Local government elections give every eligible South African an opportunity to shape the future of their community. But before voters cast their ballots, there is an important process that determines who appears on the ballot paper, candidate nominations. Today we'll unpack who can be nominated as a candidate, the qualifications and requirements for becoming a councillor, the difference between ward and proportional representation councillors, and what independent candidates need to do to contest an election.

Do you know how to check  your registration status, update your details if you've  moved, or find out whether you need to re-register?  These are some of the questions we'll be answering  today.  Joining is a representative from the Independent  Electoral Commission the IEC, Mr Masindi  Mosehana, who will guide us through everything you  need to know about voter registration, online     registration, updating your information, and why  every eligible young person should make their voice  count.  We also want to hear from you. When Should You Update Your Registration?  You need to update your details if:   You have moved to a new address.    Your address is incomplete or missing.    You have received a new ID number.    Your ward or voting district boundaries have  changed.   5. How to Check Your Registration Status    Listeners can check whether they are registered by:   Visiting the IEC website.    Using the My IEC portal.    Sending an SMS with their ID number.    Using the IEC WhatsApp chatbot.    Downloading the IEC mobile app.    Visiting a local IEC office or voting station  during registration weekend.   6. How Do You Know if You Need to Re-register?  You may need to re-register if:   You've moved to another voting district.    Your voting district has changed.    Your registered voting station no longer  matches your residential address.   The easiest way is to check your details on the My  IEC portal and compare your registered voting  district with your current address.           3 | Page    7. South Africa's Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system plays a critical role in expanding educational opportunities, developing skills, and supporting socio-economic development. However, one of the recurring challenges facing the sector has been the large number of learners who delay applying to post-school institutions until after the release of matric results. This has historically resulted in overcrowding at institutions, long registration queues, unsuccessful admissions, and confusion among prospective students regarding available educational pathways. In response to these challenges, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) launched the Apply Now! Campaign in 2012. The campaign was designed to encourage learners to apply early for admission to institutions within the PSET system while simultaneously promoting career guidance and informed educational decision-making. The initiative later evolved into the Apply Now! / Khetha Career Guidance Campaign, reflecting the importance of linking application behaviour with career development support.

As we commemorate TVET Month, we shine the spotlight on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges—institutions that play a pivotal role in developing the skills, competencies, and workforce needed to drive economic growth and social development. In his State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the TVET sector as a key driver of skills development, employment creation, and economic participation. This commitment was further echoed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Buti Manamela, during his Budget Vote Speech. Through Human  Rights Clubs established in schools across the  Emalahleni Local Municipality, Izwi Mentorship Hub  is empowering young people with knowledge,  leadership skills and a deeper understanding of themselves  constitutional rights and responsibilities. Recognising the need to create meaningful  engagement beyond the classroom, the organisation  introduced the Human Rights Workshop Programme,  bringing together learners, educators, traditional and  faith leaders, civil society organisations, government  institutions and community members on one  platform. In partnership with the South African  Human Rights Commission, the programme aims to  develop Human Rights Ambassadors who will  champion justice, equality, dignity and social  cohesion within their schools and communities

While you can only vote once you're 18,  registering early means you're already taking an  important step towards participating in our democracy.  Have you registered yet? As we know, choosing a career can be one of the  biggest decisions a young person will ever make,  and having access to the right information, guidance  and opportunities can make all the difference. This  coming week, thousands of young people in the  Overberg District of the Western Cape will have  exactly that opportunity through the Career Festival,  an initiative that brings together education  institutions, government departments, employers and  industry experts under one roof.  The festival will take place from the 27th to the 31st  of July, beginning at Myezo Senior Secondary  School in Grabouw, where more than 4,000 learners  will participate over two days. It then moves to  Qhayiya Senior Secondary School in Hermanus,  young people will have the opportunity to explore  pathways into education, skills development,  entrepreneurship and the world of work.
