trufm DHET 20 April 2026 Understanding the PSET system Season 5 Ep 13Another insightful episode of Khetha, brought to you by the Department of Higher Education and Training in partnership with SABC Education. As part of our ongoing commitment to empowering young people, job seekers, and lifelong learners, today we bring you an important discussion designed to help you better understand the opportunities available within South Africa’s Post-School Education and Training system.
The PSET system plays a critical role in shaping the country’s future workforce and supporting inclusive economic growth. Through the leadership of the Department of Higher Education and Training and the support of its Career Development Services, individuals are guided to make informed decisions about their education, training, and career pathways.
Today’s topic is Understanding the PSET System — a foundational discussion for anyone planning their future beyond school. Many young people are uncertain about what options exist after Grade 9 or Grade 12. University is often seen as the only pathway, yet the PSET system offers multiple routes designed to suit different talents, interests, and career goals.
In this episode, we unpack what the PSET system is, who it serves, and how it is structured. We explore the different institutions that form part of the system — including universities, TVET colleges, Community Education and Training colleges, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and skills development providers. We also explain how funding opportunities such as NSFAS support qualifying students, and how occupational programmes, apprenticeships, and learnerships contribute to practical skills development.
