This is your pop culture for S4 E21 "Last Week Fights, This Week Tights”.
I Am all In. Oh, I Am all in with Scott Patterson, an I Heeart radio podcast, Everybody Scott Patterson, I Am all In Podcast one eleven Productions, iHeart Radio. It's time for You've Guessed It? Pop Culture Season four, Episode twenty one. Last week Fights, this week Tights, and we're gonna start it off with a rollicking rendition of crackstaff. Oh, changing it up. I love that welk amongst yourselves. While I find it, I'm not mad about changing it up a little bit. We're keeping it fresh here in season four. We're trying. We're till I am. Also, we have to decide if we're each doing the pop culture or if you're just doing it. Luckily we have a minute. Oh no no, no, no no no, we're gonna does it. No no, no, no no no. We're all taking our turns. Good at it. It makes me realize that I how to pronunciate most of these names. Pronounciate they pronounced you know what. That's why I shouldn't read it. That's exactly why you should read it. Pronounce You're not quitting on me now. I always panic on the names because I like, I always feel bad when I get names. Right, Yeah, me too. Listen, we're all doing a segment. It's a round Robin Roy. We're gonna rock it. It's gonna be great and the fans love it all. Right. Here we go with crack staff. Um the cold open. Okay, when Miss Patty uh gets to do a scene with my wife. Uh did the crack staff know that was your wife? They did not know. I keep them in a little room very far away. We put the food under the door. When Laurel I walks away from Miss Patty, you can see the green flip flops. Lauren's were clearly her feet were not meant to be green, you know. Um. Actually, the crack staff, they're they're friends and there they're wonderful people. Um and uh, they are one hundred percent correct on this one, because Lauren, I remember, would wear either comfortable shoes, sneakers or flip flops when her feet were not going to be seen. Yeah right, exactly right. Okay. Watch the weather throughout Liz and TJ's wedding. Sometimes it's sunny and breeze, the other times it's overcast. I did not notice that it. You know, you can't imagine the delays, the clouds cause you know, if you're doing a sunny scene in the cloud cover comes up, then we're gonna wait, this front's gonna be here for thirty minutes to go back to your trailers. And you know, but that's a big scene. For a big scene like that, like a wedding scene. Would they do it over two days or is it all in one day? That scene? Now, that's that's one day? Okay, probably yeah, that's probably one day, all right. In the bar scene, the actor that plays the drunk driver also played one of Roy's classmates at Chilton. He was in her study group that created the first first aid kit for the business Fair. Also, there's a note here, there's an addendem from the crack Snaff who said, and this is how they personally feel, because um, what in the hell are they doing giving yours obscure sister a big fat wedding when they didn't even give you one. I was like exclamation point. All right, Well that's that's a point to be taken. See, that's why the crack staff is so good. The Crackstaff definitely has a motion. There's you know, that's you know what I call that, that's that's loyalty. I love them. Crackstaff, You're the best, Suzanne John Elaine. My hat's off Tea Crackstaff, and there's several others page and it just goes on and on and on. Okay, so now pop culture, I need to get my I need to get my game on. Here. Patty's trying to organize the wedding in the town square. The kids are performing around the may pole correctly, Laurel. Tough day, Patty, Miss Patty. I've worked with Joan Crawford. This is worse. Joan Crawford was a legendary actress. She started her career as a dancer in traveling theatrical companies before debuting on Broadway. She eventually became a Hollywood starlet and one an Oscar in nineteen forty six fo Aldred Pierce. Joan Crawford has a master reputation for meanness and cruelty and has one of the most spiteful reputations in Hollywood history. And I believed I probably worked with her daughter. Whoa was she? No wire Hay And I don't think she. I don't know if she had a daughter, but I maybe maybe I worked for her granddaughter at one point because am I messing that up. Yes, no, whire hay. Yeah that was Joan Crawford and Betty Davis. Yeah. I'm not going to yell about it, but I M all right. Who's up? Oh? Um, I'll go. In the same scene, Kirk is upset he wasn't made dance captain for the maypole dance. He has seen yelling at Patty and the kids. Kirk, but the maypole is an expertise of mine. I reenacted the Dwarf's maypole choreography from the Safety Dance video at my junior high talent show. The Safety Dance is a song by men without Hats. You can dance, isn't it? You can dance if you want to? Yeah, you released an eighty two and in the video there's a group of children and a little person dancing with the maple. Do you want to know how I know this song and dance? You can dance? They did it on Glee. Oh you didn't know the other I was around him. I don't. I don't like it. But who's up? Tara? All right? Suki's in the Kitten arguing with Jackson about the vegetables. Suki says that actually felt good, and she chuckles like getting a jack Lelane workout, Lorala says dead or alive. Suki says jack Lelane dead, no alive, and then Lorila's phone rings says, Oh, now that's gonna bug me. Um So. Jack Lelane was an American fitness and nutrition guru and motivational speaker. Um He was the founder of the modern fitness movement, with legendary an intense workout and diet routine. Suki confirms, um He's alive later in the scene, which aired in two thousand and four, but he passed away in two thousand eleven. Yeah. You gotta love the zip up onesie on jack Lelane. He was always outperforming. That guy was everywhere. Yeah, and he was like you know what, he was kind of old when I was growing up. Yeah, yeah, he was old for a long He was old for a long time because I just I just remember this sort of elderly guy, you know, in a zip up onesie but real and ship like yeah, like total like a mini Schwarzenegger kind of thing going on there with that guy. And he was pulling boats with his teeth and he was I don't know, He's doing all kinds of things then and they were shiny onesies. I kind of like googled it. Oh yeah, it weren't your bait. Look at they were zip up shiny one. That was a little later on, like earlier career. I don't think they were shiny. That was a little later. They were more like you a tard sort of like right right right, let me see, Yeah that's the old ones. Yes, we have to get one of them yourself. Did you guys know Chris Pine does ballet? What? Yeah? It does? What did he have to do it for a movie? What are you? He loves ballet? I saw. I don't know. I mean, he goes to ballet class. He's just a super he knows ballet. He does ballet. Unless I dreamed right. There's an article. There's an article from last April. The headline says, Chris Pine has realized that ballet is quote an incredible workout. You know what? He isn't wrong? Like when I was in college, Okay, I took a ballet class. Yeah, because I wanted to see what it would do for my legs because I was doing that, you know, the whole baseball stuff. And I gotta tell you, after that ballet class, and I'm telling the sensors, you're gonna have to beat this out. I was. I mean, it was just like I could bear walk, I couldn't walk. It was what a workout. He's not wrong. I grew I grew up dancing, and we had to take ballet because it was like the mandatory class if you want to take anything else. And I just thought it was it was hard, but I thought it was boring. I was like, I want to move, like I was too slow. My wife grew up doing ballet. She she's a brilliant ballet dancer. Save it for the thank you, thank you for that, thank you. Yeah, save that for when you interview this person. You talk. Rory and Lorelai on the phone, Loralai telling Rory she saw Jess in the town square. Laura says, you know, I do have one thing to run by you Do you have the brain power? And Rory says, I think you can swing it. Loralai says it involves the jay word. Rory says, oh, not more about Jesus. I'm sick of him and mel Gibson. Such a great line because we weren't you. Weren't you at that time at that time? Yes, Rory is referring to and it was because he did the past. Yeah, and it was film marketing campaign was everywhere, all day, all and it came out the same year this episode came out, two thousand and four. So that's why I was super relevant. Um and the film grossed over six hundred and twelve million dollars were worldwide and became the fifth highest grossing film of two thousand and four internationally. Wow, I also never saw it. There's so many movies on my list. Oh yeah, no, no, you never saw it. I think it's you, Scott, I think your net. I'm up. I'm up. At Friday night dinner, Emily is playing different music and Laurela notices. Emily tells her Richard is out of town and wants to try something different. Laurela, the music, it's different. Some chick is singing. Emily, it's Blossom, Dearie, you don't like it. Blossom Deery was an American jazz singer and pianist. She had a recognizably light, whispy, delicate, and girlish voice. Amy, I think you're up. In the very same scene, Lorelai is explaining to Rory about being grilled by Emily because of the art of war maneuver. This was not about you, It was about evading my questions. It's a classic Sun Sue art of war maneuver. If you're being attacked from the east, attack whoever's to your west, and you were the west. I never read the book like that of all really a good line. The Art of War by Chinese military strategists Sun Zoo is an ancient Chinese military book dating from the fifth century BC. Fifth century BC. Now is that negative five hundred? Yeah? Right. The premise of Art of War is that war should be avoided with diplomacy. Agree if it can app be avoided, it should be fought strategically and psychologically to minimize damage and the wasting of reasons. I'm going to can I can? I tell you? Uh? The Sun Sues Art of War became a prevalent in pop culture. Sure it was because of the movie Wall Street with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen, because Michael Douglas quotes from that book to Charlie Sheen's character, and then Charlie Sheen reads the book and then quotes it back to Michael Douglas, and then the sales of that book went through the roof from everybody who was on Wall Street and everybody. Yeah, what is your favorite Michael Douglas movie of all movies? Of all Michael Douglas movies? Oh, Manning the Stone, You've got I like, I really like Wall Street and um you got that Demi Moore one basic instinct, Oh, basic instinct. I was just watching the one with Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Dougas that was good too. Was a bad dude, no one. Yeah, he's a bad dude. But I don't know if he's such a bad dude because bad dude in that he wanted the crown jewel of his life. Is having an affair with Vigo Mortenson. Yes, but I think he was mad at her before. He wasn't mad at her before. He was mad at her because she was she was in love with another guy. M I thought she set it up to I don't know, I have to rewatch it. It's called a perfect murder, A perfect murder, Yeah, perfect murder. Yeah, he was. We didn't sympathize with him because we didn't see enough of their life before they were rich. Remember how rich they were. Yeah, he was a human, but he really had no money. Remember, this was all part of the ruse. He wanted to murder her to get the she had the money. She had that because he was losing his money off of a off a bunch of trade. Yeah, yes, and she had all that family he was he was about to get wiped out financially. Yep, yep, yep. Oh. You know what's a better Michael Douglas movie. The Game? The Sean Penn Michael Douglas. Oh so really you've never seen Deborah Deborah krra ungers in that. She's fantastic in which one? The game? The Game? I think she's Yeah, the Game is a greater. He was an aunt man that I just thought. It's in theater. He is an aunt many thriving still Douglas. He's also in all that good TV stuff. He's in that show. It was on a bit ago and Evangeline Lily's going around saying she met him and he's a grandpa. I'd liked a burnt god. I didn't. Wow. That's in the press. She's going around saying that, Oh, Evangeline Lily, she said, what again, that he's a grandpa. He's a guilf Oh, yes, a guilt Oh, my god. Well, his co star is Michelle Pfeiffer, who is the prettiest lady ever. Like, literally, Michelle Pheiffer really was I think the movie star of our era, and I'm going to say is because there was really nobody like her. She's amazing. Yeah, I love her truly, truly, truly from her from Greece to all the way through. Yeah, there was just nobody like her. She's a cool rider. Why am I talking about her like she's in the past tense? I don't know. Yeah, she's totally around. Look at her. Excuse me. Everybody's an aunt there? Why am I? Why are we not an aunt? Man? We should be an I don't know, but look at her the premiere. Yeah, she look great in the movie too. Yeah she is rad anyway, Um, all right, I think Tara is all right. So this is justin TJ getting ready for the wedding at Luke's apartment. They point out Luke seems nervous about the wedding and using old polish on his shoes. TJ says, the queer eye guys are very against old polish, So Queer Eye for the straight Guy, which was later shortened to just Queer Eye as a TV about gay men giving advice on fashion, grooming, interior design, food, wine, and culture to straight men. It aired in two thousand and three and ran for five seasons um. Each episode features the Fab Five performing and make better usually for a straight man, revamping wardrobe, redecorating, and offering advice on grooming, lifestyle, and food and The series was later rebooted in twenty eighteen with a new Fab five and continues to run on Netflix today. Yeah it's yeah, I love that show all right. So the last pop culture our friends Luke and Lorelai are watching at the Renaissance wedding. Themes start and they're making fun of the dancers, uh and Morelai says, think they know any Zeppelin? Oh? Rose is nice? Luke says, does she remind you of someone? And Laurelai says, can you say Leslie van Houghton? And then the jets are tumbles down the aisle. Now that's impressive, lorgeous wild Oh yes, she looked like a Manson wack so led Zeppelin M was an English rock band formed in London in nineteen sixty eight. The music at the wedding is instrumental while led Zeppelin is attributed to playing hardcore rock and heavy metal. Leslie Van how In is an American convicted murderer and former member of the Manson family. So that's why, Um, that girl looked a little crazy. And and the woman they're referring to has a craze looked on her on her face. You know, one of the Manson women girls whatever, just died. Linda Kasabian just just passed away. She was she was granted immunity for testifying against all of them, and I don't know that she served any time. And she had some daughters, and she lived up in Washington State. Um, apparently, as I've been reading, in a state of poverty, poverty and well, and the English rock band Kasabian took their name from her, huh, in avery in a very random way. That's the story that Serge Pizzorno, the one of the founder of the band, the guitar player and a songwriter, didn't know what to call the band. Then he just was reading a Manson article and he read her name and he said, boy, that that'd be a great name for a band. So he named a Kinsabian. Does anybody remember if I told my Stairway to Heaven story here or if it was on the dast to tell it, we'll tell you if we heard it before. So it's always about So Stairway to Heaven was a big, big song, like at school dance when I was growing up. Yeah. Yeah, So it was like at my middle school or like my high school dance, and it's eight minutes long, and you would always be like, I hope I get someone good for Stairway to Heaven because it's eight minutes. So if you got a dud of a dude, yeah, you were just like, oh my god, yeah, Stairway to Heaven. And then it's awkward because it's slow and then there's a fast part. It's just a very complex thing to navigate it. You know. I apologize. In every music store in the United States, there were signs on the door and inside the store in the guitar section, no playing Stairway to Heaven because the people that worked at the music stores were so sick of hearing that song from every kid that walked in and started playing Stairway to Heaven, so that you weren't allowed to play. You get kicked out if you played it in there. True story, Well, kids. I think I think that day tuned. We've got some big stuff we do. We have some very large stuff happening. Yeah, season finale, it's exciting. Thanks everybody that's going to wrap up Pop Culture season four, episode twenty one. We'll see you next time. Best fans on the planet.
