This is your pop culture for S3 E1, "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days".
I Am all in, Oh just you, I am all in with Scott Patterson and I Heart Radio podcast Everybody Scott Patterson, I Am all In Podcast, I Heart Radio one of them productions. We are here for pop culture on those lazy, hazy crazy days. Fun Facts Riley Pelusis take us through it, Welcome back, and this is perfect because it's been like ninety degrees this week, so it's, oh my god. We've got a heat wave this week, like a heat wave. It's it's smoking out there. And to kick it off, we have those lazy, hazy crazy days reference. So this is not only the episode name, this is uh in reference to the Nat King Cole song Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer in ninety three. The song can be heard throughout the whole episode and even referenced by Lorelei um It's stuck in her head, she can't get out of head like all of us. Um. Nat also has hit songs like l O V, Unforgettable Smile and When I Fall in Love. In two thousand, Coal was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Early Influencers category. And I had it all planned out that we had sing lyrics. But we did that gem in the recap episodes. Just a little, a little bit, a little bit again. You're so good, roll out those lazy, crisy hazy chrysas. Yeah, I mean, go back to the recap and here the whole thing and play it over and over again. Okay. Next we have Lorelai has a dream of Luke. She wants things besides Q tips for him to go to the store. Lorelei says, m cotton balls world peace, Connie Chung's original faceback, and then to Lorrial Lize Billy goodbye said, and Nancy Leopold and Loeb I changed my mind. Don't tell Rory so the first one. Connie Chung is a TV personality known for her softball interviews. Was once Dan Rather's co ankorball interviews. Really, I never thought Connie was like a softball Oh. Sure, that's why she was. She was so mainstream and so commercial. Sure those people don't ask hard questions sometimes Gayle King does. She's also married to Mari. I love that. By the way, they've been married for so covided to the show. Chung is married. Okay, huh, he's not the father more. I believe it's retiring, like finally after a hundred years. Yes, he just announced the end of the Morriy Show after thirty one years. It's just like hundred thousand episodes or someone who will find the daddy, That's that's what he said. I don't know who the daddy and like gives some maternity tests or something online. You are not the father. Our culture will suffer without that show, that's for sure. Uh. Sid Vicious on to the next reference of Sid and Nancy. Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols and his girlfriend Nancy had a controversial relationship to say the least. Luke was referring to Lorla being pregnant and the twins, you know, maybe fighting in her stomach, maybe causing kicks. Um. Even though Sid was the sex Pistols bassis guitarist, he didn't know how to play that well. And then Leopold and Loebe We've referenced this before. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loewe, too well educated nineen year olds from the upper class Chicago families, decided or caused a scandal when they tried to convince uh Or they were convicted of the murders of Bobby Frank's so again fighting in her stomach. We've referenced this before in the recap episode. So Lorela calls Rory about her dream. Rory says, you had another dream lor license. Yes, Roy says, the doctor is in lor license and Bill Maher is canceled. The name of the show was politically incorrect. For God's sake, didn't anyone read the title? He was supposed to say those things. So first, the doctor is in is a classic line of Lucy's in the Peanuts comic strip Lucy is the therapist and eliminates stand kind of booth. One piece of advice from Lucy. You can't drift along forever. You have to direct your thinking. And then Bill Maher Jr. Is an American stand up comedian, television hosts, social critic, political commentator, author, and actor. Bill Maher, host of the hit show Politically Correct on ABC, was canceled by the network's parent company, Disney with no real explanation back in June two. It turns out it was what we talked about after the September eleven next Jackson said is Tasuki. Judy Vincent has to go to work now. Actress Judy Garland married Meet Meet Me in St. Louis director Vincent Minnelli. They were married six years and had a daughter, Liza Minelli. Judy Garland's real name is Francis Gum and she used to perform with her sisters, the Gum Sisters, but changed their name to the Garland Sisters. Then she was inspired by Jagy Carmichael song Judy and changed her name to Judy Um. Judy has five husbands, had five husbands no longer, and Liza and Ellie went on to have four husbands. Family tradition done done um. Most recently, uh, Liza Minelli was seen on the stage of the two thousand twenty two Oscars presenting Best Picture with Lady Gaga. Everyone talks about that being like the moment, what a beautiful, what a beautiful example of generosity and heart coming out of Lady Gaga, And this is the thing, thank god it was. It went viral. Thank god it went viral to counter balanced that ugly incident. I mean, what a what a heart. I think that is who Lady Gaga is. She did the same thing with Tony Bennett, like she just is like beyond lovely, cares so much about people and at the Grammys. She was helping people accept their awards as they walked up the stairs. She helped them with their addresses. And like Queen Gaga, Lady Gaga is a cool lady, lady cool, very easy to root for, you know. I think that's so genuinely who she is. She's not doing it for us to all fawn over her or like her. She's doing it because that is literally who she is. Just an outstanding example of humanity. Really, just yeah, good for her. M Lady Jo generous could just say let go generous, Lady Jo Jo generous punter better it was next up. Rory has asked about her time in d C. Very says I got to see Archie Bunker's chair at the Smithsonian when I was about her favorite moments. Rory is referring to the wing chair used by a character Archie Bunker, on the television sitcom All in the Family from nineteen seventy nine. The polstered would frame chair was purchased for the show from a thrift store in southern California and used in production until the final season. We already know the beloved Sally Struthers was part of the iconic show UM But here's one more fact. All In the Family had two pilots. They changed things based on the audience reactions and network suggestions. All In the Family's first pilot, in nineteen sixty eight was under the title Justice for All. It featured two different actors as Mike and Gloria, and Archie's last name was Justice instead of bunker Um. Wow. Yes, Paris is getting ready for her wonderful date, and Paris says, they're wonderful date. Paris says, they give up careers and become alcoholics. And if your Sonny in von Buelow wind up in you wind up in a coma, completely incapable of stopping Glenn Close from playing you in a movie. Wait, I don't what was that from? That was from the Jeremy Irons as Klaus vun Buelow, Ron Silver as Alan Derschwitz and Glenn Close's Sonny, Alan Dershowitz the lawyer, Alan Derschwitz, the lawyer represented Klaus von Bueloh, Oh God, Alan Dershowitz has had quite a career. Wow, yeah, you so. Sonny von Bulow was a socialite, has slipped into a coma, which was blamed on her insulin injected from her husband, Claus Woan Buelow. She spent the last twenty years twenty years of her life in a coma. She was portrayed by Glenn Close in Reversal of Fortune, and Claus was played by Jeremy Irons. I wish he won the oscar for Um. During a reshoot of Fatal Attraction, suffered a concussion from one of the takes. Glen Close suffered a concussion from one of the takes when her head smashed into a mirror. After being rushed to the hospital, she discovered that she was actually a few weeks pregnant with her daughter, actress Annie Stark. Oh, whoa I know? Um she Glen Close also allergic to tobacco. Throughout the filming of one hundred and one Dalmatian's clothes had to smoke over two d herbal cigarettes. Boy, I tell you she She was in some great films. Yeah's man and that way minute there she was what was the name of that film that Jeff Bridges started, He played the city who played the guy that killed his wife? What's the name of that? And Glenn Glenn Close was the process. She was a prosecuting attorney in San Francisco. Peter Coyote was a prosecutor. Um Jagget Edge, jagget Edge. Riley on the Quick great film, she was I've never seen that. I have to watch that. That was such a compelling film, Laura. I got Rory out of Friday Night Dinner, Laura License, I thought you and Dean might enjoy a little Peaches and Herbs tied together ned and it feels so good. That was funny that they didn't like call out the song instead of that was that was clever, It was. It was really cool. Um Peaches and herb our husband and wife R and B duo known for the song reunited as Amy just you know, saying her heart out for it. You think they get sick of singing that concert? No, because you know why they bought their house. Do you know these bands they get sick of playing these hit songs because it's all that like like led Zeppelin hated playing Stairwoid to Heaven. They couldn't stand it. True. But in the wise wise words of Tricia Yearwood, I always bring this quote out. She said, sing the one that brung yet, And it's like these artists must always sing the one that brung you sing the hits people love. That's what the Rolling Stones still do that in concert thing. There there are no dummies. They they bring out their big, big bats when they go on concert. I think it's like I think I heard John bon Jovi talking about this, which I'm not like the biggest John bon Jovi fan, but he said, you got to do like eight hits and then you can do a couple of new songs and maybe like a deep album cut and a cover, couple covers. That's what you know, That's what put them on that stage is those hits. They better play them. Yep. Can you imagine if groups like actually showed when they hated playing the song? On Living Rory and Lorla I talk about not having talked to Christopher since the pregnancy news. Rory says, but for now solidarity sister. Loria I says, oh okay, when that aired the first time, that was so freaking hilarious because yeah, yeah, the sister what was that? What was that crap movie called The Divine Secrets Sisterhood? And so it was so I remember watching the Gilmore Live you know, not live live, but you know what I mean back in the when it first ran that joke, and it was like, oh my god, because I was the summer that everyone was just like talking about that movie, which that movie wasn't good? Was it? Oh? No, you guys know and saw it not good. The film was made in two thousand two and it was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. Yes, along with Walk to Remember Too. Oh I know. Um, Next we have Lorla opens up about Luke and Christopher. Um. Lorela says, no, it's not so bad. I'm lucky. I know. I just feel like I'm never going to have it the whole package, you know, the person, the coupled life. And I swear I hate admitting it because I fancy myself wonder Woman, but I really wanted the whole package. So we've talked about Wonder Woman a few times. You can never talk about her enough. Amy's favorite. Um, and I am the Linda Carter wonder Woman. I know we have gal Ga Dot, but that's not No, that's not wonder Woman. Linda Carter. Her posters in my garage. I'll take a picture for you guys. Yeah, put it in the group. Tech. Appreciate that I have one because I have a house in l a and a house here, Francisco and I have the same poster in each place because I can't not have it. Did you know Gal Gadote? Good Dot? Good? Do you say the Gal Gadote? I don't know if it's good Dote or good dot, but it's definitely she was. Well, it doesn't matter because she was paid ten million dollars for that film Crazy, which she also produces. But that's thirty three times more than what she made in the first film of Wonder Woman in two thousand, seventeen times more than Linda. Why wasn't she paid more than ten million dollars to lead a big ten pole film. Ten million seems pretty good? Yeah, but I mean that's half of what you know, the big male stars make. Right. Did she get a back end deal? Did she get points? I don't know, But did you guys see that Mark Wahlberg's houses for sale for eighties six million dollars? And I immediately clicked on every single photo, like you want to should we buy it? The production by let's buy it. It's an actual mansion. Let's buy it and then podcast from there. That'll be our podcast house. I can contribute about six million. So is this the one that's got a gym in it and the whole deal. The huge gym sane. Yeah, like a full gym, like twenty four hour fitness is in there. There's like a movie theater. The pool is amazing. There's like a full basketball court. So where they where they moving to they get I don't know. He and Mark hasn't told me you gotta go to get it out. We got it. Maybe it's moving to another house in l A. I don't know. Well, I mean, you leave an eighty six million dollar mansion. Maybe he's downsizing. Maybe the kids are going to college. I don't downsizing. He's got all that Wallburger's money to Mark, but I didn't downsize. That's not in his vocabulary. I don't know. I googled net Worth Mark wallburg because I thought, how does he have eighties six million dollar house? He's got plenty of the wall Burgers is doing well? I think, so have you had one? I liked it. I went to the one on Sunset and Sunset Plaza. That's not Wallburgers. It was a pop up. No, no, that was a Wallburger's. It didn't last long there. I thought. The only one is Morongo Casino No, there was one right there on Sunset Bulevard and Sunset Place. There was a Wall Burgers and I went there and I enjoyed my burger. I really had had. I had a meeting with a director and he said, meet me at Wallburgers. And I said, sure, man, Yeah, isn't it their slogan, meet me at Wallburgers? Up? Meet me? You are I stand correct? Is it still there? No? And you are right? Though it was it was, it's no longer there. Yeah, into Wallburgers on Sunset. Was it a Papa there it is? Look guys, yeah, it wasn't a pop They took over a space. I think they. I think they, Oh God, this thing changes. I think that place used to be Cafe Med and then then it became Wallburgers, and Cafe Med was very popular. And then that used to Cafe Med was there forever and then it then it was gone. And that was a great lunch place because it had an outdoor patio and you could sit there and you could you could just people watch right on Sounds at Boulevard, right in the heart of it. It was really a great place to have lunch. Yeah. I don't know if you can go to Marongo. I'm just saying, if you're on your way to Palm Springs. But it was it was a good burger. I tell you, I was surprised. But that's a better quality burger than than most. Yeah. M so round it out. We have our last reference. Um, Rory and Larlae come back and they're talking on the couch how their days went, and Rory says, ladies and gentlemen, the Williams sister takes center stage of the timing of this, the ping pong of this. We know Venus and Serena Williams as a very decorated tennis players, and between two thousand and two thousand sixteen, a seventeen year span, they collectively won twelve Wimbledon singles nine single titles I know, and the two sisters have faced each other thirty one times in professional matches. Um. The Williams Sister stories told in the Oscar nominated film King Richard, starring Williams Smith. Will Smith won the Oscar for his role along with a couple of other whoa whoa, whoa whoa. Okay, I saw this film on the plane back from Atlanta because I went to a convention in Atlanta. Um, good, it's his performance in that was great. It was greatness. It was Denzel level greatness. And nobody can touch Denzel right you really, it's hard. You'd be hard pressed defying anybody with that kind of talent. Um, you know, Uh, Will Smith delivered an incredible performance, being credible. He was unrecognizable. It was a great role. His production company, UH Westbrook uh bankrolled it right produced it. It was stunning. It was a very commercial film with a very compelling family story about how these girls came from nothing in Compton and they had this father who just trained him and trained him and trained him and trained him and forced his way a into very tony bel air tennis clubs to get great teachers to instruct his daughters. And he just wasn't taken no for an answer. Um. It was a stunning performance. And after I saw that, I said, if that doesn't win the Oscar, nothing will. I mean, that was denzelion. That was washingtony and quality work. Um And I know, listen, he did a really horrendous thing. But I can't take away from that performance. That performance is going to go down as probably his crowning achievement. I mean, that was something that was really something. It's the role that you pick. Oh, you have to see this thing. And it was about him protecting his girls against all those in the media and in in in you know, and and all of these clothing companies and sponsors wanting to exploit his his daughters. And he was in this protective mode, you know, and that's the character that he played. And there's a scene in there that some point it made me really choke up because because Venus was the one that was being pushed first, because they didn't have enough money to train both of them, right, so Venus was was getting the special treatment. And she was twelve thirteen years old, and there was all this controversy because she wasn't playing in tournaments. She was just training down in Florida with Um, John Burntell's character that the that the tennis an. Yeah he's great, um and uh. And then they decided, you know, that she was gonna debut in California, in Oakland at this tournament, this big tournament, and so she was doing press for that at in Boca Ratone at the Tennis Academy and the most poignant scene of the whole film for me was that, you know, the The interviewer was saying, do you really think that you can at fourteen years old going there and compete and you may face around your Sanchez Vicario the number one in the world. You really think you compete? And and her answer was yes, I'm very confident, I'm very well prepared, and uh, I think I can win. And that's the answer she gave. And then the guy keeps pressing, goes, really do you really think, I mean, come on, let's think about it. Your fourth and that's when her father stepped in, played by Will Smith, and just be rated this guy, I mean really got in his face and screamed at him, said that's a fourteen year old child. You want to put doubt in her mind? And I was just like I was like yeah, and everybody in the plane watching it was like yeah, So anyway, that's my two cents. Great film worth seeing. You know, I know Will did a bad thing and he's gonna pay a heavy price for it. Um, but you cannot take away um that performance. That was stunning, stunning, stunning, stunning. Thank you very much. I'd like to thank the Academy. I was gonna say thank you for coming to my tent. Talk. I'm not long winded, I swear I'm not. Well, that's it. You're pop closure next week, next week, I rebelitate Pablo Picasso. Yeah, hi, bye everybody. Thanks for thank you the best fans on the planet.
