This is your pop culture for S2, E19 "Teach Me Tonight".
I am all in you, I am all in with Scott Patterson and I heart radio podcast. Hey everybody, Scott Patterson and this is a pop culture mini sold starring Riley Pelusis. And we also have with us Amy Sugarman and Danielle Romo, who has graced us with her presence. Last week she had an appointment and could not be with us for that pop culture episode right where were You? Well, she understands that sometimes when she's not there, she has much more fun on another podcast. She really can't stand being here. Now I'm lying, she loves this one. Um. Anyway, we're going to launch into another episode of pop culture. Uh, Riley taking away this episode for pop Culture had so many movies, So this is for episode nineteen, season two, Episode nineteen, Teach me tonight. Um, just so many movies, so strapping because you were in pain? She said, so many movies and oh God. Alright. So first Lord Lion Rory and Dosy's market and they see the new bag, but boy Loya Li says, Taylor's ladder mysteriously disappears, suddenly making Dean invaluable no matter what fancy tricks. Lawn Chaney Jr. Over the over their polls and then he's like flipping all the groceries and such. Lawn Chaney Jr. Is the son of silent film director dramatic actor Lawn Cheney, known as the Man of a Thousand Faces for his makeup techniques and flair. Um Lawn Channey Jr. Knows known as the Wolfman, Lenny of Mice and Men, and Frankenstein Monster, which we all know now is the monster Um Dracula frank seen Um. According to the Wolfman makeup artist Jack Pierced, Wolfman makeup took a sixteen twenty two hours to apply, which sometimes burned him. Can I tell you I did a I played an alien um overlord who comes to Earth to enslave all the tank Tanesese and alien nation iteration of a Fox TV movie. And the makeup they had to put on me and it does. It's medical adhesive that they put around the top of your forehead and the side like going down the side of your ear two so they can glue on that that rubbery fleshy helmet that they paint right to make you look like an alien. And it takes, I mean it takes forever to do that. I was there at three am every morning and they and it does. It's like when they use the medical adhesive it burns the skin and then that it takes them less time to get it off. And they have to use this lucian to melt the medical adhesive to get it off, and it takes about an hour to get it off at the end of the day. But that was four That was three four hours putting it on in the morning. Yeah, that's about sixteen to twenty two. I mean, how do you mean you better be like drugged to do that. I can't do my makeup for more than five minutes, so I don't. I don't know. Next up, Lordlie talks to Docie about which movie was going to be played this year. Taylor says, there's a line behind you. Lorly says, you chose The Yearly Again, Taylor says it is a fine, wholesome motion picture, moving story, lovely scenes of nature. The Yearling is a film from Jane Wyman's daughter refused to speak for her for her two weeks after she saw the film and MGM's most successful film of however, because it costs nearly four million dollars, why didn't someone speak to someone the Jane Wyman's daughter, we don't know the details of the film refused to speak to Is that because something dies, someone dies an animal? That's a good question. Oh yeah, I get right, probably right because Jane Wyman's character and maybe have died, the great kid Riley Lacking. And I know you're all going to email and say, you know, it's like, what am I supposed to do? Like, I don't even know what she's talking about. Don't even have to tell him. Let us know on Instagram, they'll let us know. They'll let us know totally. I think any animal dies or something. I'm blurring this with old Yeller, but like that's what I'm assuming. And Jane Wyman formerly married to Ronald Reagan, right, yeah, why she really? I'm pretty sure. Yeah, I think she was Ronald Reagan's first wife. I'm checking that as you're checking. We'll move. Oh you found it. That Ronnie. He just he was mover and a shaker. She had a couple of those spouses, she did. Jane Wyman had more husbands according to Google, Yes, five total to be exactly five, Jane wan It seems like Fred Carger was twice though, so people do that we'll say four. Taylor did that too? Right? Right? Yeah. Jane Wyman was married to President Ronald Reagan when he wasn't president from forty to forty nine. He then married Nancy in stayed married to her until until next Rory hangs up with Christopher and Laura Lae deflects a conversation. Roy says, Okay, you're gonna tell me what you're fighting about that keeps you from talking to each other ever again. Laura Lee says, what about desperately Seeking Susan? Roy says, what about my mother's too? Laura Lisas never saw Angie Dickinson. Desperately Seeking Susan was film starring Rosanna Arquette and Madonna. This was Madonna's first film a major film role, but the original plan was to give hold Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton star in the film. Campbell withdrew five thousand dollar sponsorship because of the scene in which does tells Roberta that she should not she should stop smoking. And Andie Dickinson is known for her series on NBC called Policewoman, where she played Detective Sergeant Pepper Anderson, which is why Laura Lae refers to her like she's question he's questioning her. I didn't get that. That's more of like a Colombo line for me. Colombo never saw it. Colombo, you know, because he was known as the bumbling Detective. I don't associate Angie Dickinson with detective or anyway, go ahead that I remember it. Remember. Merchandising for the series included a posable Pepper Anderson action figure with accessory sets including outfits and cartoon storyboards and moving on. Okay, this was quite the dense pop culture scene. Rory and Laura Lee are trying to choose a movie. Laura lisas the Wizard of Oz. Roy says The Sting Laura Lee says Rocky. Roy says Crimes and Misdemeanors Laura's Lari says The Singing Detective, where he says that was a mini series or Lisa, so, so it's six hours long? Good point? Oh I got it, Arthur, yes, or Sophie's choice very similar. Oh man, I can't choose. There's way too many good movies. The burden is overwhelming. I'm sinking under the pressure. My grasp on reality is slipping. I can't do it. Oh hey, how about Cabin boy, did you did you did you see did you see Crimes and Misdemeanors? Did anybody did you see that film? Martin? You didn't see Crimes and Misdemeanors Martin Martin Landau, Angelica Houston. Martin Landau is a really high end Denniston, West Westchester County, and he's having an affair with Angelica Houston and then he and then he tries to dump her and any and then he hires a hit band to kill her. And I saw fatal Attraction. This was a little more subtle. Nobody's boiling any animals, and you know this was this was a different This was more psychological, even though that was that was the movies I hadn't seen. I do think I saw Cabin the Sting, that the brilliant Paul Newman, But you didn't see the Sting? Was that Robert Redford? And my love for them both is so mad together they are highly recommend to everybody listening. Just google Robert Redford. Sure did you say shirtless? And I just went okay, well, uh so rattling these off quickly. We've already talked about Wizard of Oz released total made five dollars a week, and the term tornado was a thirty five ft long Muslim stocking spun around among miniatures of a Kansas farm and fields and dusty atmosphere, which I think just a hilarious vis roll there the staying Robert Redford didn't see the movie until June two four. It was released in nineteen seventy three. The movie was filmed on the back law of virtual studios, and the diner in which Hooker meets Lonegan is the same diner interior used to Back to the Future when which Marty McFly first meets his father, um Rocky. We've talked about Rocky prior to his breakthrough role in the film. Sylvester salone earned thirty six dollars a week as an usher and the first It's the first sports film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and the single most expensive cost on film was makeup, which makes sense with all the prosthetics, crimes and misdemeanors. Nine film, directed and starring Woody Allen and Martin Landau Um Woody has over twenty four OSCAR nominations and four winds. The original title was Brothers, but had to change it because there was sitcom of that name. The same name The Singing Detective as a BBC one mini series lasted six so it's Sir Michael Gambon regularly spent up to six hours getting his flaky skin makeup applied. Arthur was one film about a playboy billionaire Arthur played by Dudley more than classic film Classic What was it is? Sir John Gilgood as Hobbes, right, he was Hobson. Hobson, He played Hobsons. Would you like me to walsh you? That's what um. The film did a lot of research into a billionaire spend their money on these days. Arthur's magnetic floating bed is one such thing. It really exists and costs about one point five million dollars. Next up, we have Sophie's Choice. Meryl Street begged the director for this role, literally on our hands and knees. It's been told Martha Keller and Streisan both tried to win the role as well, and she Meryl Streep is related to the founder of Pennsylvania. Wanting to watch this movie, but it seems like I might just cry. Yes that talked about this movie. I have avoided this film as well for the same reason. Yeah, it feels pain. Oh, it feels like a journey to go down. I watched it was on like HBO or one of those shot times the other day until I watched Hearts, and then I started reading about it, and then I just was like, I'm not ready for this. Um. Next up we have Cabin Boy. Movie started Chris Elliott, who works take a total breaks. David Letterman was in it, then it's a fine film. If David Letterman appears, all right. Next up we have a really fun one, Laura licens. If we take off Flitch and Urban Cowboy, we still have seventy five possibilities. Rory says, how are we going to pick just one? Lass? I don't know. Maybe we should do like a movie marathon weekend, you know, just show one movie one after the other three days and a charge everyone of fortune, gouge them of bottled water. Have those really discussing bathrooms? Would be like our own Woodstock so Fletch Classic Chevy Chase has mentioned interviews that Fletches his favorite of his movies because it gave him the opportunity to be himself. I tell you what, Just to interject here quite briefly, and I'll let you get going again, Riley, But how many of you on this panel today you have used that line? And Fletch just put it on the Underhills bill one night, thank you, thank you very much. I have I have done that one night, batter Moon River just put it. In an interview, Chevy Chase stated that the makeup department let him keep the fake teeth that he used for Gordon Lady, a jet engine repairman. Tremendious amount of good. Chase said that gunk philthy just tremendous amount of gunk, really good, So five stars, all right, thank you, thank you, Chase. Jemmy Chase said that he's the fake teeth one in public, so most people wouldn't recognize him. How could you not? Next up is Urban Cowboy, starring John Travolta. The soundtrack album was a major hit. It sold several million copies and with songs like looking for Love? Can I Have this Dance? And all that I'm looking for Love? Is amazing? And I don't want to make this about me, but there is no celebrity that people tell me I look more like than Deborah Winger in Urban Cowboy. I don't I do see it? I do I do see the bone structure. Yes, literally brought me on the street. So here, it's so weird. Did they ever stop you on the side, So only when you were in the street, only in the middle of the middle of the street. So they stop and say the hell out of the middle of the street, Debra Winger, and I always was like thank you. Um. Patsy Swayze Patrick Swayze's mother taught John Travolta how to do the two step for this movie. And the prison rodeo scene was authentic and was shot in actual prison in Texas. The prison held a rodeo from one to nine UM. The last references here is Woodstock, which is held from August fifteen to the eighteenth and nine. Four thousand people attended and was held forty miles outside of Woodstock, New York. This is where Jimmie Hendricks played the Star Spangled banner and some called it the greatest moment of the sixteen Can you name the owner of the land of the farm who allowed Woodstock to be absolutely not? What's his name? No idea, I'll give you a clue, come on, come on, Max Yasgar. No, but did he get a lot of money? Probably I'm thinking he did pretty well. You know, I don't even know that was like I just or even knew that was owned. By the time we got two wood Stuff, they were half a million strong. Everywhere there was a a song in a celebration. Anyway, it's very soothing, It's what a great lovely I recommend anybody to watch the Woodstock movie. If it's a documentary, it's a fantastic film. It's the best one of I think maybe one of the best American documentaries ever made. That Woodstock documentary is just iconic. Anyway, Kirk and Laurel are in the diner. When he comes up to ask her about movies, Kirk says, it's true. Don't get me wrong. I love the blue collar work. I enjoyed the play of every Man, but as much as the mail letter delivered and the DSL line installed in the latest j Lo flick rented films with me of the deep sense of pride in my soul. I am a Kirakura Sawa. First of all, I just literally watched a j Low flick. I watched that which one do you watch? Marry me? Love the wedding Wedding planner, but literally says seven Samurai. Great movie, Kirk says, excuse me, Laura Lee says Seven Samurai. Krik says, I'm sorry, I don't. Akira Kurosawa directed seven Samurai. It's a great Japanese movie. Japanese movie. No, I'm sorry, I have the wrong person. Who's the guy who directed those Facts of Life? I don't. Oh my god, Speaking of Facts of Life, let me tell you guys something. Robin Thick's mother is the singer Gloria Loren, So his dad is Al and then the mom is Gloria loren who. Gloria had like one hit in the eighties, but with Alan Thick, she wrote the theme song to Facts of Life. Come on and Robin Thick, You guys, Robin Thick performs like a stripped down Robin Thickey sexy version of the Facts of Life theme song and the Different Strokes theme song. And I'm telling you, guys, it is so so you're so riley. You're getting to the punch line of this whole of Syracuse. I don't think that you set up for ten minutes and then get sidetracked here these this pop Colder episode, these like long scripts going on about the movie. So it's it's long setup, so thanks for sticking with me through it all. I'm here, I'm here, I'm hanging on by thread. What's the punch line? Kirk says, A sad Klata. Sorry in my soul. I know, I am a sad Kolata. You got the name wrong. That was one of the best lines. See that's that scene cap That was great. Yes it was seven. Samurai is a film from the writer and director Akira Kurosawa to designed a registry for all one and one residents of the village, creating a family tree to help his extras build the characters and relationships with each other. I know and uh. It's often credited as the first modern action movie. Asad Kolata is a TV director who has directed hundred seventeen episodes and proves fifty episodes of different shows like Who's the Boss, Sister Sister in Facts Life Next Up. Loral Li says, what, well, what kind of movie is it? Kirk says, Oh, you mean, is it blue? No? Perfectly pg. Lor Lie says, uh, huh, Kirk, it's not exactly babe. It's more like babe too. When he's describing his film that he wants to present. What is babe? I never talk pigs. I never saw these films. It just was it James Cromwell and was co starring with a pig. Yeah, I just I never. Oh my god, that's like saying you've never seen Cinderella. Well, I know I'm gonna do this weekend huh facts of Life. And we've actually previously talked about Babe on this podcast. But did you know that USA pork sales dropped after the movie came out, which makes sense because, like because the pig, they humanize the pig to the point where people fell in love with the pig. Yeah. Can't you imagine eating a blowny sandwich? You're a hot dog anymore. I would love if somebody could come up with a way to make bacon healthy but also delery bacon. Yeah they have, they have, They have managed to do that, but like real bacon, but make it healthy. Bacon is turkey bacon. The reason bacon tastes so good is because the fat content, and you take that out. Yeah, of course take out the good stuff. Yeah. I love bacon, but I like turkey bacon. Jess says, okay, well I'll be right over here. When you are you know. I never took you for a bacon eater. I thought you were. I just never amy. I never took you for a bacon eater. Oh thank you? I think that content is significantly lower in turkey bacon content fat content, same calories, same fat, same stoked sodium. No, girl, yeah, girl, I'm reading the internet right now. It's all like you've been sold everything. You got to be careful. Bacon is highly addictive. Crispy bacon. Yeah, I don't need a lot of bacon, but you could eat a whole plateful. Oh actually, I lie. I eat a breakfast sand which like once a week with bacon, maybe even twice a week. Wait, I'm reading the internet too, and it says turkey bacon has slightly fewer calories and fat than pork bacon and can be a healthier option for people in special diets or who can't? What are you reading that? From Turkey Bacon lovers dot com, healthline dot com continuous The debate is not the Turkey sales are going to go down after this podcast. It really is a heated debate. I see it, I see both ways. Yeah, it's a back and forth like Luke versus loreli At. Yeah, it's a hot You know we're gonna we're starting a national conversation. We need to put a pole up like who won the fight? Luke Laurel or pork bag Neither because love lost that evening. I don't know if you remember this from a few days ago, but so next we're going to round out with this pop culture with a buying or in a bop or did you oh, did you do an accent banging? A bob just says okay, well, I'll be right over there when you are. I just can't wait for that learning to begin. Hey, are we going to do some of those schoolhouse rock songs? And the one little factoid for this this show was made for kids, but at least one instance, the cartoon's got a little risque, which one of the shot heard around the world. A group of diverse cartoon characters gather into a space around the country, and but at least one lady in southern California is completely nude. What we have to do a like a slow mode. I do just know, I remember, I'm just a bill. I'm sitting here on Capital Hill. David McCall's son was struggling with multiplication, but I had no problem memorizing Rolling Stones songs fascinating Roy goes, do not give me that whole I'm misunderstood Kurt Cobae anything. You're way stronger than that, and I don't even want to hear it. You have you have to go to college, just as so Courtney. What about you say? What about me? Kurt Ovain is the lead singer of Nirvana who died at the age of twenty seven. Very sadly. Kurt never had a relationship with the media and would often try times try to distance himself, which is what Rory's referencing here with being misunderstood, um, which Jess kind of is in the town anyways, Before Nirvana. He was a band called Fecal Matter. It takes me back to that bowl of peanuts, remember when Emily and Lorela went to that bar. Courtney Love was married to Kurt Cobain for two years before his death. She was offered a villain roll of Madison Lee's and Charlie's Angels Full Throttle and the role and said went to Demi Moore, whoa that's going to wrap it up? Huh yeah, good, good job, great job. A little long, but good. No, it's okay, it's okay, it's okay. It's a lot of movies. I'm gonna talk to some people. Don't worry about it. It's gonna be okay. See you guys.
