  • Police say a shooter opened fire at a busy Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, leaving six people dead. The assailant is also dead.
  • The alleged shooter facing possible hate crime charges in the fatal shooting of five people at a Colorado Springs gay nightclub will make a court appearance today by video from jail.
  • AAA predicts that nearly 49 million people will travel by car, and 4.5 million will fly between Wednesday and Sunday.
  • Authorities are reporting power outages in multiple cities of Ukraine after renewed strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure facilities. A maternity hospital in southern Ukraine was also struck, killing a newborn baby.
  • The number of uninsured Americans this year reached a historic low of 8%.
  • In sports, there were no changes in the College Football Playoff rankings, the shorthanded Sixers got a win and the Brewers traded their starting right fielder.

  • Americans who have gotten the updated COVID-19 boosters appear better protected against symptomatic infection than those who haven't. That's according to a first look at the new shots' real-world effectiveness, released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, held a COVID-19 briefing at the White House which was expected to be his last before he retires from the government at the end of year.
  • The holiday travel rush is already on, and it could spread out over more days than usual this year. AAA predicts that nearly 55 million people in the U.S. will travel at least 50 miles from home this week, an increase over last year and only 2% less than in 2019.
  • A huge horde of ancient gold coins dating back to around 100 B.C. has been stolen from a museum in southern Germany.
  • Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has warned the United States that it would face “a more fatal security crisis” as Washington pushes for U.N. condemnation of the North’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile test.
  • Reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after being convicted earlier this year on charges including bank fraud and tax evasion.
