  • Hurricane Nicole made landfall early Thursday along the east coast of Florida and was downgraded to a tropical storm, but it was still battering a large area of the storm-weary state with strong winds, dangerous storm surge and heavy rain.
  • Control of Congress remains unresolved as of Thursday morning. Republicans are close to securing the House but the Senate is coming down to several key races and a runoff in Georgia. President Joe Biden said that he knows voters are frustrated with continued inflation and his leadership.
  • The Labor Department is expected to report that consumer prices jumped 8% from 12 months earlier and by a sharp 0.6% from September to October.
  • Gas is $3.80 a gallon according to the AAA. A year ago, gas was $3.41 a gallon.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia next week, avoiding a possible confrontation with the United States and its allies over his war in Ukraine.
  • Drinks are on the house at this year’s U.N. climate talks and the price of food will be slashed in half, Egypt’s foreign minister said Thursday following complaints from delegates.
  • Luke Combs is the winner of the Country Music Association Awards' coveted entertainer of the year trophy.
  • In sports, the Magic shut down a hot scorer, the Celtics got their fourth straight win, the Bills are monitoring the health of their quarterback and the Pens halted their skid.

  • Georgia’s closely watched race between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker will go to a Dec. 6 runoff because neither candidate took more than half of the vote.
  • Republican Ron Johnson from Wisconsin won another term for U.S. Senate.
  • Massachusetts voters have approved an amendment to the state constitution that will increase taxes on those earning more than $1 million a year. 
  • Abortion rights supporters won in the four states where access was on the ballot. Voters enshrined it into the state constitution in battleground Michigan as well as blue California and Vermont.
  • Russia’s military says it’s withdrawing from Kherson. It would mark one of Russia’s most significant and humiliating setbacks in the 8-month-old war. 
  • Facebook parent Meta is laying off 13% of its employees as it contends with faltering revenue and broader tech industry woes.
  • NASA is again postponing the launch of its new moon rocket because of a storm threatening the Florida coast.
  • Fresh off his World Series win, Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker has agreed to a one-year contract to remain with the team next season.
  • Climate activist Vanessa Nakate has warned against new fossil fuel projects on the African continent at the U.N. climate summit.
  • Scores of turtle species are under threat from poaching. The illegal trade of turtles in the United States is aimed mostly at markets in Asia and Europe.
  • Mindfulness meditation appears to work as well as a standard drug to treat anxiety. That's according to the first head-to-head comparison of the two options.
