They discuss whether homeowners should simply anchor pergola posts to an existing four-inch concrete slab or install dedicated concrete footings for additional stability. John and Dave explain that the height and wind load of a pergola can create significant leverage at the base, making a more substantial footing a safer option.

 They also discuss using Simpson post anchors rather than burying wooden posts directly in the ground, noting their preference for properly secured brackets. Dave shares his experience installing a freestanding outdoor shelter, describing how he poured concrete footings, anchored the structure with large Tapcon screws and accounted for drainage.
