Mumbai or Bombay looked vastly different a hundred years ago. Salim Ali, the legendary bird watcher and ornithologist, grew up in the first decades of twentieth-century in south Bombay. He has left a delightful account of his school days and summer holidays in his memoir The Fall of a Sparrow.
