STORY of AMERICA 🇺🇸 VJ Day marks the day the Empire of Japan surrendered in 1945, which ended World War II (1939-45). August 14-15, 1945: Japan announced its intent to surrender, and Emperor Hirohito's surrender speech was broadcast, leading to massive celebrations in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and other Allied nations. September 2, 1945: The formal signing of the surrender documents took place aboard the Battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, which is officially recognized as VJ Day in the United States. September 3, is marked in China and the Philippines.
