A theological system that interprets the Bible by dividing history into distinct periods called "dispensations," each characterized by a unique way God interacts with humanity. Dispensationalism emphasizes a literal interpretation of scripture, particularly Old Testament prophecies about Israel, and distinguishes between God's plan for Israel and his plan for the Church. It also typically includes a premillennial eschatology, meaning a belief in a literal thousand-year reign of Christ on Earth following his second coming, and a Great Tribulation and Rapture of Christians before the expected Second Coming of their Messiah, Jesus.
