More details have emerged about a tragic avalanche death on one of our highest peaks, with a body recovered yesterday in Mount Cook National Park.
Mountain Guides Association spokesperson, Will Rowntree, says the man was in a group of four highly experienced skiers on Mount Dixon.
He says the man was swept away by an avalanche on the north east side.
"It's an example of how the mountain is such a dynamic place, and even a really small avalanche in such big consequences can lead to the worst-case scenario."
The death will be referred to the Coroner.
