There's across-the-board interest in tackling our biggest killer, as Auckland University launches its new Department of Cancer Studies.
It brings top experts under the same roof - in a step towards a comprehensive cancer centre.
Yearly cases are forecast to jump from 30,000 to 45,000 by 2044 - as our population grows and ages.
Professor Warwick Bagg says now's the time to act.
"We've got a strong community of people who are interested in doing this - not only academics, but clinicians, the general public, we've got donors."
