Questions are being raised as to why competing weather forecasters NIWA and MetService don't work together in times of extreme weather events.

MetService has recently concluded its weather forecasting models performed badly before the Auckland floods, leaving staff in disbelief over the inaccuracy.

WeatherWatch Head Analyst Philip Duncan says the situation wouldn't have gone this far if the Government hadn't allowed NIWA to commercialise everything.

"MetService would have a lot more access to tax-funded modelling and be able to improve it, because climate change- or even the fact that things are warming up- is breaking some of the modelling."

Genesis is trialling tech to let owners charge their car battery off-peak for use in the house at peak times, effectively making it a power-storage unit.

The three-month test on a four person home let the car feed electricity to the household, drawing little from the national grid. 

General retail manager James Ryan says hypothetically, it could save up to $2000 a year.

"We're trying to look, in practice, what could actually be achieved. It's hard to work out based on our trial, but at the moment we're trying to work out if the technology works - and from there, we can work out the potential savings."

A report by multiple health workforce unions shows private providers have captured 80 percent of the $3 billion increase in Health NZ and ACC spending since 2022.

Report researcher, Edward Miller, says not putting money into public health makes us more reliant on the private sector.

"It will cost us more and more to be able to do these things, because of the inherent cost disadvantages of the private sector - the higher cost of borrowing and the need to satisfy private shareholders."

Labour wants to help state tenants to get a foot on the property ladder.

It's proposing a rent-to-buy scheme, with Kainga Ora putting aside $100 rent a week, working up to a deposit.

The party would also lift the income cap for five percent deposits, to $300,000, making more buyers eligible.

Labour Housing spokesperson Kieran McAnulty says getting these renters out of the 'poverty trap' will benefit the whole country.

"The announcement today to expand the 5 percent deposit and also have a scheme to actually get Kainga Ora tenants out of state housing, out of the poverty trap and into home ownership, I think is something that will benefit the whole country."
