Katy Perry has reportedly faced some pushback over her proposed song choices ahead of her AFL Grand Final performance.

The pop star is set to headline as the pre-game entertainment act - and it's been revealed league officials told her to play the hits from her back catalogue while Perry wanted to showcase newer stuff.

Australian correspondent Murray Olds says it's fair that the AFL gets to make the calls - as the league's footing the bill for her performance.

A criminal defence lawyer has highlighted the challenges around convicting people in historic cases.

Lawyer Tony Bouchier's comments come after the Supreme Court overturned two guilty murder verdicts in a cold case killing.

James Henry Wilson and Mark Joseph Hoggart were found guilty in 2021 of killing Red Fox Tavern publican, Chris Bush.

Bouchier's says the evidence wasn't strong enough, especially around a potential third, deceased, suspect. 

"The defence - it's sometimes a dream when you get to that third person, and if you look at the Supreme Court decision, they couldn't discount the fact that he wasn't there."

The Education Minister denies ever considering banning Virtual Private Networks as part of the social media ban for under-16s, but says the tool was talked about.

The Post reported this morning Erica Stanford was looking at prohibiting VPNs, which lets internet users mask their location and online address.

The Prime Minister and Stanford rejected the claim.

She says they discussed VPNs in a different context. 

"They can be used for children to get around social media bans, and we also talked about the fact that big tech firms have the ability to know when children are doing that."

The Government's celebrating the new diesel storage tanks opening at Marsden Point.

The Northland site will store 93 million litres emergency reserve, ordered at the peak of the fuel crisis, in April. 

It paid Channel Infrastructure to upgrade its tanks. 

Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper says the Government's looking to boost up emergency supplies following the uncertainty of the Middle East conflict.
