McGrathNicol has been appointed voluntary administrators, with FTI Consulting as the receiver.
David Jones employs more than 6,000 staff across its 38 stores, which include one New Zealand site at Auckland’s Westfield Newmarket.
Australian correspondent Murray Olds says bricks-and-mortar retail has been in trouble for some time, and last-ditch talks have broken down.
