US media is reporting Donald Trump secretly swapped planes as he left a NATO summit in Turkey last month, to evade a possible Iranian threat.

It's believed the US President boarded Air Force One in view of media, before being covertly moved to a military aircraft with the help of a catering truck.

The White House has not confirmed the secret switch, but reports claim it came after credible warnings.

US correspondent Dan Mitchinson says this move has prompted concerns after journalists and personnel were on board the original plane.

Chris Luxon's held on as Prime Minister and National leader, but there's likely to be fallout from the party's recent turmoil.

Luxon's leadership was put to a vote during a near three-hour caucus meeting in Wellington this morning. 

It followed murmurings about a potential coup - with some MPs signalling they wanted Luxon out of the top job. 

Former National Minister Maurice Williamson says these events were still 'damaging' for the current Government. 

"This was just the worst possible thing to be happening to National at this time...he couldn't have left it as business as usual."

The uncertain economic environment could be the reason for climbing unemployment and declining job ads.

The latest Seek data shows job ads fell 0.8 percent last month, the third consecutive month of decline.

It suggests conditions remain strongest in the South Island, while centres like Auckland, Wellington, and Waikato face greater headwinds. 

Westpac Chief Economist Kelly Eckhold says the labour market has not emerged unscathed from the Iran war. 

"Perhaps at the start of the year, they were looking forward to a much better year, but business confidence really got buffeted around the last three or four months."

National MP Chris Penk's been dumped from Cabinet and his ministerial portfolios, after instigating today's failed coup. 

Prime Minister Chris Luxon managed to fight off the challenge for his leadership - at a three-hour caucus meeting in Wellington today. 

He says Penk's role is now untenable. 

NZ Herald political editor Thomas Coughlan says Penk was likely running the numbers - for Erica Stanford or Chris Bishop to contest the leadership. 

"I think there was a classic stalking horse or sometimes they're called kamikazes - they launched the attacks and destabilised...so that it triggered the confidence vote." 

Paul Goldsmith will pick up the Defence, Veterans, Space, GCSB, and NZSIS portfolios. 

Simon Watts will become Minister for Building and Construction.
