Geordie Beamish has won the 3000 metres steeplechase at the world championships in Tokyo, making history in New Zealand track.
He's the first Kiwi to secure a running victory in the 42-year history of the meet.
Athletics NZ chief executive Cam Mitchell was present at the race - and says he believed Beamish had it in him.
"It was a pretty special night, it was amazing to be there."
