Barry Soper: Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent on the Government delaying fuel tax hike by one year

View descriptionShare

The Government has confirmed it's cancelling next year's fuel tax hike.

The excise was due to increase 12-cents a litre from the first day of 2027, but will instead go up 5-cents a litre from 2028.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop says this will give Kiwis more time to recover from post-Covid economic pain, and recent uncertainty in the Middle East.

Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper explained further - and outlined how much this could cost down the line.
