Kauai residents are on alert with the forecast for Hurricane Lowell maintaining a turn to the north. Ocean Safety is putting more lifeguards on duty as the storm is expected to generate powerful, damaging, and warning-level surf. Helicopter companies on Hawaii Island pitch in to help a kumu hula deliver much-needed supplies to areas hard hit by Hurricane Lala.

With several storms moving toward the islands, Gov. Josh Green issued a statewide emergency proclamation that opens the Major Disaster Fund to help with any disaster relief operations. Preparations for Hurricane Lowell are evoking memories of Hurricane Iniki for many on Kauai, including a journalist who covered the 1992 storm. SNAP households impacted by Lala may automatically see a replacement of August benefits.

FEMA is giving Hawaii more than $18 million to help weather disaster-related power grid impacts. Two people were rushed to the hospital after being burned in a fire near Black Rock Beach in Nanakuli.
