As frigid temperatures grip Georgia, residents are urged to take proactive steps to ensure their homes remain warm and energy-efficient. Electric- and natural gas-powered heating systems play a crucial role in these conditions, prompting Georgia utilities to implement policies preventing service disconnections when temperatures plummet below 32 degrees, even for customers with outstanding bills. Here are some key recommendations from Georgia Power, Atlanta Gas Light, and Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs): 

Lower your home thermostat to 68 degrees or below during extreme cold spells. This eases the strain on heating systems, reducing the risk of malfunctions. 

For those experiencing financial hardship, there's a 24-hour amnesty period for customers behind on bills during sub-freezing temperatures, it's essential not to solely rely on it. 

Examine your insulation to prevent heat loss. Inspect weather stripping around doors and windows for any gaps. Homeowners with attics are advised to explore the addition of more insulation to enhance heat retention.

Maintain electric furnace systems by changing air filters monthly and pleated filters every three months to sustain efficiency. Gas customers are advised to keep meters visible and regularly inspect for any signs of damage.

Thirteen-year-old Zharria Musette from Lawrenceville will embark on a six-week intensive dance training in New York City this summer, securing spots at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre School of Dance after successful auditions. Despite initial nerves, Zharria, with only three years of consistent training, impressed judges and earned recognition at recent dance competitions. Specializing in ballet, modern, and jazz, she aspires to dance professionally, with dreams of studying at Juilliard or joining the Rockettes. Her mother, Tai’Sheree, applauds Zharria’s dedication and talent, foreseeing a bright future in dance for her daughter.

STORY 3:Fallen State Trooper Remembered During Georgia Gwinnett College Commencement

Jimmy Cenescar, a dedicated law enforcement officer and student at Georgia Gwinnett College, tragically lost his life in a pursuit while on duty. He had anticipated his graduation as a significant milestone, overshadowing even his completion of trooper school. However, Jimmy's dreams were cut short by his untimely death. In a poignant ceremony, his brother Joel accepted Jimmy's diploma on his behalf, amid tears of both pride and sorrow. Despite the somber occasion, Jimmy's family and loved ones chose to honor his memory with celebration, following his spirit of resilience and determination. STORY 1:Alleged meth trafficker who led deputies on chase denied bond

Jonathan Medina, an alleged methamphetamine trafficker, was denied bond by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office following his arrest for evading a traffic stop in Suwanee, which resulted in multiple vehicle collisions. After attempting to flee on foot, Medina was apprehended by K-9 deputies. He sustained injuries during the escape attempt and was hospitalized. Authorities found 430 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle, leading to charges of methamphetamine trafficking, fleeing law enforcement, obstruction of officers, reckless driving, among other offenses. Medina remains in custody.

STORY 2:Gwinnett County working with state officials on road widenings

Gwinnett County is partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation to progress road widening projects, focusing on Scenic Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway. The collaboration includes a $85,000 study for Scenic Highway, funded by the 2017 SPLOST fund, and a GDOT-overseen preliminary engineering on Sugarloaf Parkway, with the county contributing $30,000 towards the effort. These initiatives aim to address congestion and improve safety, featuring a comprehensive approach that includes feasibility studies, traffic assessments, and conceptual corridor improvements.

Melissa DaSilva, a distinguished nurse and leader with a comprehensive background in behavioral health, disabilities, and nonprofit management, recently assumed the role of Chief Programs Officer at Annandale Village in April. STORY 1: Alleged meth trafficker who led deputies on chase denied bond
Jonathan Medina, an alleged methamphetamine trafficker, was denied bond by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office following his arrest for evading a traffic stop in Suwanee, which resulted in multiple vehicle collisions. After attempting to flee on foot, Medina was apprehended by K-9 deputies. He sustained injuries during the escape attempt and was hospitalized. Authorities found 430 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle, leading to charges of methamphetamine trafficking, fleeing law enforcement, obstruction of officers, reckless driving, among other offenses. Medina remains in custody.
STORY 2: Gwinnett County working with state officials on road widenings
Gwinnett County is partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation to progress road widening projects, focusing on Scenic Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway. The collaboration includes a $85,000 study for Scenic Highway, funded by the 2017 SPLOST fund, and a GDOT-overseen preliminary engineering on Sugarloaf Parkway, with the county contributing $30,000 towards the effort. These initiatives aim to address congestion and improve safety, featuring a comprehensive approach that includes feasibility studies, traffic assessments, and conceptual corridor improvements.
STORY 3: Annandale Village announces Melissa DaSilva as its Chief Programs Officer
Melissa DaSilva, a distinguished nurse and leader with a comprehensive background in behavioral health, disabilities, and nonprofit management, recently assumed the role of Chief Programs Officer at Annandale Village in April. Annandale Village stands out as a unique nonprofit in the southeast, offering a wide spectrum of care services for adults with diverse disabilities, from independent living to skilled nursing, with a focus on promoting independence and hope for the community. DaSilva is excited to bring her expertise to the organization, where she will oversee all programs at Annandale's campus, including residential programs, day programs, and health services, furthering the mission of the nonprofit.

The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office's Victim Witness Program earned the 2024 Georgia Crime Victim Service Collaborative and Innovative Project Award from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Recognized during National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the program demonstrated an exceptional commitment to victim-centered care. Serving over 84,000 crime victims in 2023, the program organized various initiatives like the Homicide Support Group and a candlelight vigil. They also distributed resource guides and conducted a Community Conversations web series. Gwinnett's Victim Witness Program was honored as the Child Fatality Review Committee Metro County of the Year. Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson praised the team's dedication, ensuring victims receive the support they need throughout the legal process.

STORY 3:Venezuelan refugee finds her way to GGC to complete college dream

Laura Davis, a Venezuelan native, fled her country due to political turmoil and found refuge in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Forced to leave college just before completing her psychology degree, she persevered and enrolled at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), drawn by its affordability and proximity. Despite challenges, Davis thrived at GGC, particularly in the RISEUP research lab, which focuses on social equity. She found a supportive community that valued her aspirations and ethnic background. Now, as she graduates, Davis plans to pursue a Ph.D. in social psychology, aiming to contribute meaningfully to academia and society. She will speak at GGC's spring 2024 commencement, symbolizing resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.
